Turn to PBS Online for a library’s worth of lifestyle programming

- BY GEORGE DICKIE

When we think of PBS, we usually think of it as a place for the fine arts, music, sciences, history and public affairs. But it also offers a wealth of lifestyle programming.

Indeed, whether you’re a gardener, a woodworker, a fitness enthusiast or a dog or cat lover, there is something for anyone wanting to know more on PBS Online and the PBS Video App, including the following.

“This Old House”

(www.thisoldhouse.com): Ask any homeowner who has watched this seminal home renovation show over its 44 seasons and they’ll tell you they’ve picked up some tip or technique that they’ve used in their own home projects. There’s lots of good information to be found on the show’s website, including episodes of the series dating back to its premiere in 1979. Yep, 1979.

“Backyard Farmer”

(www.pbs.org/show/backyardfarmer/): If you’ve got a green thumb or just want one, then this series currently in its 67th season is required viewing. Premiered in Lincoln, Neb., in 1953, the show offers up plenty of home lawn and gardening information, albeit with Nebraska climate and flora considerations, as a panel of experts share their knowledge and answer viewer questions.

“Animal Talk” (www.pbs.org/show/animal-talk/):

Pet owners will want to take notice of this digital-only series of 26 short videos in which host and animal advocate Karen Kalunian provides tips about adoption, health, training and all the important considerations that come with owning a pet. Human guests include local vets and pet care professionals as well as staff and volunteers at area shelters.

“The Joy of Painting”

(www.pbs.org/show/best-joypainting/): The late Bob Ross was your host for this 1983-94 instructional series in which he taught techniques for landscape oil painting, completing a painting in each session. Guest painters would also appear to demonstrate their own painting techniques.
