Movies for Grownups Awards celebrates Jamie Lee Curtis

-

Jamie Lee Curtis first gained fame as a young “scream queen,” but now, she is reaping rewards for being a decidedly grownup talent.

While the “Halloween” veteran has revisited that horror franchise in several recent films, she has been earning much praise and an Oscar nomination lately for her performance in the film “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” She also is the recipient of this year’s career achievement honor at the 21st Annual Movies for Grownups Awards With AARP the Magazine. Taped in late January at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.) it will be televised as a “Great Performances” offering Friday, Feb. 17, on PBS (check local listings). Alan Cumming returns as host of the event.

The daughter of actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, Curtis – who also has a best supporting actress nomination at the ceremony for the aforementioned “Everything Everywhere All at Once” – began her career on television with series guest roles and a co-starring part in “Operation Petticoat” in the late 1970s, then the original “Halloween” came soon afterward. Though scary stories were her specialty for a while, movies including “Trading Places” and “A Fish Called Wanda” broadened her image, a fact sure to be cited as she receives her special Movies for Grownups Awards honor.
