Howard College earns big wins against New Mexico JC on Sophomore Night

It was a great night for Howard College as both the mens and women's basketball teams came away with the win over New Mexico Junior College at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum. Howard College also recognized its sophomores on both the men and women's team as well.

The Lady Hawks walked away with 4833 win over the Lady Thunderbir­ds, while the Hawks won their game 92-74.

HC LADY HAWKS 48 NMJC LADY THUNDERBIR­DS 33

Howard College trailed by five heading into halftime, before rallying in the second half to upset No. 23 New Mexico Junior College 48-33. The Lady Thunderbir­ds jumped out to 13-5 lead after one quarter.

In the second quarter Howard found its offensive rhythm thanks to Ann Mary Zachariah who scored nine points while Malgorzata Byczkowska's contribute­d five.

The offensive effort by Zachariah and Byczkowska was enough to cut the Lady Thunderbir­ds lead by four with the score 24-19 heading into the half.

The third quarter was a low scoring affair as the Lady Hawks put nine while the Lady Thunderbir­ds put up three. The nine by Howard was just enough to give them their first lead of the game with a score of 28-27 heading into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter it all fell apart for New Mexico as the Lady Thunderbir­ds scored only six points in the last quarter. Howard put up 20 points to help secure the win with a final score of 48-33.

Howard's Ann Mary Zacahriah led Howard as she finished the night with 16 points, 10-rebounds, and 1 assist, fellow teammate Byczkowska finished the game with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

With the win the Lady Hawks improve to 14-13 overall and 5-7 in WJCAC conference play. The Lady Hawks will travel to Clarendon on Monday as to take on the Lady Bulldogs. Tipoff is set for 5:45 p.m.

HC HAWKS 92 NMJC THUNDERBRD­S 74

The Hawks led from start to finish as Howard College walked away with a dominant 92-74 win over the Thunderbir­ds Thursday night. The Hawks led at halftime with a score of 48-31.

In the second half, the Hawks put up 44 more points to seal the win for them with a final score of 92-74.

Howard's Kavion Mcclain had big game as led the Hawks in scoring with 24 points while shooting 8-14. Lorenzo “Trey” Fort finished the game with 16 points shoooting 5-9 with 8-rebounds on the night.

Hawk guard Josiah “Jojo” Freeman contribute­d 12 points while shooting 4-11, while forward Deng Mayar contribute­d 11 points while shooting 5-7, and had 7-rebounds. Howard's Dontae Horne and Kwo Agwa both finished the night with 10 points a piece.

With the win the Hawks improved to 19-9 overall and 9-5 in conference play which has them sitting in fourth place in the WJCAC standings. The Hawks will also be on the road Monday as they get ready to take on the Clarendon Bulldogs. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

SOPHOMORE NIGHT AT THE DOROTHY

While both the Hawks and Lady Hawks came away with big wins at home Thursday night, it was also a special night as Howard College recognized its sophomores on both the mens and women's teams.

The recognitio­n ceremony was held before each of the Hawks and Lady Hawks games where they were presented with personaliz­ed memorabili­a from Howard College.

Sophomores recognized for the Lady Hawks were: Jaiden Shells, Kaeona Marquez, Daysha Tijerina, Kyla Daniel, Selena Humphrey, and Malgorzata Byczkowsk.

For the Hawks the following sophomores were recognized: Lorenzo “Trey” Fort, Dontae Horne, Josiah “Jojo” Freeman, Kavion Mcclain, Deng Mayar, Kwo Agwa, and Darrius Davis.
