Clyde holds on for a tough 4-1 win over Coahoma

- By PATRICK GONZALES Herald Sports Writer

Falling short in the last inning of round one of the “Battle of the Bulldogs” Coahoma was looking to take round two over Clyde Thursday. Coahoma once again found themselves in position to come from behind and steal the win, but Clyde would stave off Coahoma's rally to walk away with a 4-1 win.

Down by three headed into the top of the seventh, Coahoma began to mount a late rally just like in game one. Coahoma's Bryce Davis was walked and Coahoma put two more base runners thanks to a couple of singles by Kayden Kelly and Rowdy Atkins.

Coahoma's Wyatt Oden was up to bat next as the potential winning run with the bases loaded and facing two outs. Oden would blast the ball to centerfield but Clyde's Cameron Barrera would make the catch to the end game.

The game was closer this time around as both teams went scoreless in the first two innings. Clyde would strike first putting up two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Coahoma would put up a run in the top of the fourth.

Coahoma's Davis was caught trying to steal second, but the play would be costly for Clyde as Coahoma's Nickolas Gonzales scored from third to get Coahoma on the board. Clyde would extend its lead in the bottom of the fifth with another pair of runs to take a 4-1 lead. The scoring effort would be enough for Clyde to hold on for the win.

Clyde's Aiden Spurlock was credited with the win for the Bulldogs as he allowed seven hits and one run over seven innings. Spurlock also struck out nine and walked one.

Gonzales took the loss for Coahoma on the mound. Gonzales went six innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out three. Coahoma finished the game with seven hits total for one run. Gonzales and Davis led Coahoma at the plate with two hits each.

Coahoma (6-7, 0-2) will look to bounce back as they travel to Ballinger to take on the Bearkats in district play next Tuesday. The junior varsity team will play at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at 7 p.m.
