Young, Joslin named CHS Val & Sal
Coahoma High School is proud to announce the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2023 is Jocelyn Young and Zoie Joslin, respectively.
Jocelyn is the daughter of Micky and Kyria Young. She will attend Texas State University in the fall to pursue degrees in microbiology and sales. Her post-graduate plans include attending the University of Houston to earn a doctorate in optometry.
Jocelyn will attend Texas State University as a Terry Scholar, which is a scholarship given to a select few Texas high school students. While at Coahoma High School, she earned the prestigious FFA Lone Star Degree, was named the HCJLA Top Hand, and was selected as a Capital Farm Credit Ag Student of the Week. Jocelyn was a member of the FFA Radio Broadcasting state semifinals team. She was also named the Big Spring Rotary Club Student of the Month.
Jocelyn has been a constant leader at CHS. She served as the class president from her freshman through junior years, was a student council representative, and she served in many leadership positions in the Coahoma FFA chapter including as this year's president. On the district level, Jocelyn was the El Rancho District FFA reporter.
Her other school-related extracurricular activities included tennis, UIL academic competitions, National Honor Society, and yearbook. While
still a student at CHS, Jocelyn attended Howard College and was named to the President's List and Dean's List for her high academic achievements.
Jocelyn has been in the top 10 percent of her class academically all four years of high school
“If I could give any piece of advice to younger students, it would be to leave everything you do better than you found it,” she said. “This is something I was taught through the FFA organization, and I will carry with me forever. Our Coahoma community invests a lot of time and effort into us, and it is only right that we give back.”
Zoie Joslin, is the daughter of Chris and Kristen Joslin. In the fall, Zoie will attend Texas A&M University in College Station to study sports management.
During her years at Coahoma High School, Zoie earned the prestigious FFA Lone Star Degree, which is the highest award given by the organization. She was a FFA Radio Broadcasting state qualifier, and she was named as a Capital Farm Credit Ag Student of the Week.
Zoie was selected to compete in the Permian Basin Chapter of the FCA Volleyball Allstar game this summer. As a CHS athlete, Zoie received numerous Alldistrict team honors in both volleyball and golf, and she was selected to the 2022 Texas Girls Coaches Association Academic All-state team for volleyball.
Taking advantage of the dual course program at Howard College, Zoie excelled in her academic studies and was honored by being named to the President's List.
Zoie held several leadership positions at CHS including class president, student council president, National Honor Society vice-president, Coahoma FFA vice-president, El Rancho FFA District first vice-president, and the See You at the Pole student leader. She was active in volleyball, powerlifting, golf, track, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and was a CHS Athletic council member.
“My advice to younger students is to get involved,” Zoie said. “My favorite parts of high school and best friends were granted to me through various organizations and sports.”
