This week’s review are fiction and mystery titles in large print format.

In the war-torn London of 1939, fourteen-year-old Hazel and five-year-old Flora are evacuated to a rural village to escape the horrors of the Second World War in The Secret Book of Flora Lea (LP F HEN P) by Henry, Patti Callahan. Living with the kind Bridie Aberdeen and her teenage son, Harry, in a charming stone cottage along the River Thames, Hazel fills their days with walks and games to distract her young sister, including one that she creates for her sister and her sister alone a fairy tale about a magical land, a secret place they can escape to that is all their own.

A kid walks into your bookstore and guess what? He’s your son in A Little Ray of Sunshine (LP F HIG K) by Higgins, Kristan. The one you put up for adoption eighteen years ago. The one you never told anyone about. Surprise! It’s a huge surprise to his adoptive mother, Monica, who thought she

had a close relationship with Matthew, her nearly adult son. But apparently, he felt the need to secretly arrange a vacation to Cape Cod for the summer so he could meet his birth mother without a word to either her or his dad.

It’s hard to deny friends asking for help even when it means stepping headlong into danger in The Woman Who Beat the Odds (LP W CRI C) by Crigger, CK. As a sort of left-over deputy from a previous adventure, January Billings is compelled to answer the call when a valuable gun is stolen from the local mercantile, and the storekeeper viciously assaulted. The town marshal is out of action and the sheriff is an ineffectual fool.

When Turquoise Ranch hand Curly Stevens went into Flagstaff to meet a new employee arriving on the train, his first impression of Rob Barringer was of how big and strong the tenderfoot is in The Tenderfoot (LP W VAU R) by Vaughan, Robert. Rob’s eagerness to learn and his willingness to take on the most difficult jobs wins everyone over, including ranch foreman Jake Dunford, and Melanie Dunford, his beautiful daughter.
