Cross Roads Young Marines recently completed some community service work at Comanche Trail Lake, as part of a partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife and The Big Spring Area Community Foundation. The group - four Young Marines and three staff members, along with Parks and Wildlife representatives - installed fish attractors, in advance of the trout stocking.

“The fish attractors and the fish stocking enhance the fishing experience for local anglers, and ultimately improves the quality of life in our community,” George Bancroft, Director of The Big Spring Area Community Foundation, said.

According to Bancroft, the fish attractors are the result of efforts from Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Foundation, both providing financial support. The Foundation provides funding from the Hayes Stripling Sr. Memorial Fund.

According to Bancroft, the Cross Roads Young Marines are one of the many recipients of grants provided by The Big Spring Area Community Foundation. The Young Marines utilize grant funds for special projects, trips and training throughout the year.

“The Young Marines apply for and typically receive a grant from the Foundation every year; it just made sense to contact them,” Bancroft said.

Bancroft added,” This is the second time in recent years the Big Spring Area Community Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife have worked together to increase the fish population and improve the fish habitat at Comanche Trail Lake.

According to Carrie Rodman, Cross Roads Young Marines Unit Adjutant and the Regimental Service Officer for YM units across Texas and New Mexico, helping out the local parks and wildlife also helps the Young Marines in learning and earning their Conservation Ribbon. “Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
