Big Spring setting sights on Pampa after Littlefield matchup was canceled
Big Spring was dealt a less-than-ideal hand heading into last week’s 48-12 loss to Lubbock High. Off-the-field health concerns knocked a few players out of the game and forced usual backup’s into starting roles against the 5A Lubbock Westerners.
Sophomore Eli Cobos started his first game at quarterback for the absent Gabriel Baeza. As expected, there were growing pains and mixed results from the four quarters that he started. On one hand, Cobos started the game off slowly and threw several passes that either did not reach their intended target or seemed to travel too high over their heads. On the other hand, Cobos delivered one flawless pass down the right sideline for a 27-yard touchdown to Kaegen Mitchell.
“That was a great throw,” Steers coach Cannon McWilliams said. On defense, the Steers had some trouble in the secondary and gave up several big plays through the air to the talented Lubbock gunslinger Brandon Smith. Defensive linemen Elijah Darrow and Toby Galaviz were bright spots on the Steer defense and were able to make several plays in the Westerner backfield.
This week, Big Spring will have an unintentional Bye Week after choosing to cancel this Friday’s matchup with Littlefield over the past weekend. They will now be able to set all of their focus onto their Homecoming Game matchup with the undefeated Pampa Harvesters (5-0) that is scheduled for next Friday night.
The Harvesters have been putting up a ton of points this season and have outscored their opponents 256-96 through their first five games. They are set to play Perryton this Friday and could be 6-0 when the Steers face them.
