Coahoma looks to put loss to Idalou in rearview, host Stanton on Friday night

- By SHAWN MORAN Herald Sports Writer

Coahoma (4-1) lost their first game of the season last Friday night when the No. 4 Idalou Wildcats kept their foot on the gas for all four quarters en route to a 66-22 victory.

The Bulldogs’ offense was still able to come up with some big plays, including an 81-yard touchdown pass to Sean Striegler in the third quarter, but the defense was unable to stop the Idalou run game.

Running back Brysen Kerby broke the century mark for the fourth straight game on the ground (109 yards) and the quarterback Kolt Redden was also able to connect on two touchdown passes.

One of those completions was to Colin Daniels, who now has four touchdowns on seven receptions this season.

Daniels also came up with an interception on defense and was all over the field in leading the Bulldogs in total tackles.

This Friday, the Bulldogs will be hosting the Stanton Buffaloes (2-4) who are coming off of a 28-18 home loss to Lubbock Roosevelt. Their two wins this season are over inferior opponents.

The Buffaloes won their first game of the season over one-win 3A Grape Creek and winless San Angelo TLCA. Three of their four losses were by 10 points or less and the lone blowout was a 27-6 loss to Forsan.

Stanton focuses their offense on running the ball, and running the ball some more. They are averaging 260.2 rushing yards per game while only passing for 41.8 per game. The rushes are evenly distributed between senior running backs Evan Cox and Austin Hewtty, junior Miguel Moreno, and senior quarterback Tyler Benedict.

The Buffaloes have only put together three sacks all season but they do make a ton of stops behind the line. Junior Eddie Wittenbarger is the top playmaker on defense for Stanton and leads the team with 67.0 tackles this season (six tackles for loss).

Coahoma will need to look to spread the ball around to all of their playmakers and get back to their bread and butter. Kerby earned most of the touches last week after falling behind big and Joslin wants that to be different this Friday.

On defense, stopping the run will be the main focus after Idalou gashed Coahoma on the ground last week. To keep that from happening again, look for Colin Daniels and Kobe Cervantes to make a difference at or behind the line of scrimmage against Stanton.

Joslin knows that his team needs to be playing their best football at this point of the season and they will look to get back on track against an opponent they should be able to handle. The Bulldogs are not overlooking the Buffaloes, but they will be trying to work out their biggest issues against a team that they beat 61-8 last fall.

The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
