A Moment in Time The Haunted Cash Register

-

Last September, I went on a ghost hunt in the location of Big Spring’s first cemetery. As I was walking in the weedy lot, I looked over to see a “ghostly” mystery, or at least I thought I had. Lying on a muddy street on north Scurry, between the former Front/ First Street and 2nd was a large square object. Curious, I turned it over to find it was an old cash register. A check was lying along the ground partially underneath the cash register and dated 1978. It had never been deposited and was in pristine condition. A cash register found on the site of the former cemetery by the tracks. It had to be something phenomenal or maybe even paranormal.

I tried to lift the cash register, but it seemed to weigh a ton. However, I was shocked at how the cash register was in such good condition considering it had rained the night before. In fact, I almost got stuck on that same road. I went home and could not get the old cash register out of my mind. If I left it there, no one would ever know what happened to it. If I picked it up, would I be arrested for theft? Since it was technically on the road, I thought I would be in the clear. At 11:00 pm, I convinced my grandson and his friend, to go with me to get it. They loaded it into my pickup and quickly took apart the drawer thinking there could possibly be thousands perhaps millions of dollars inside! Disappointed,

Pictured above is a mysterious cash register found in Big Spring’s first cemetery. they found nothing, but underneath the drawer was a tag that read “The National Cash Register Company” Made for Ben McCullough- 1945. I kept thinking the cash register had been dumped there, in the weeds, along the road a long time ago and the very thought that it was on hollowed grounds would have kept the cash register in this great condition. Amazingly, this cash register and check had been preserved for 41 years

Once I arrived home, I immediately started to research Ben McCullough. He owned the old Wes-Tex wrecking in the 1940s. So, what if someone robbed the wrecking yard in 1978,
