Big Spring Swim & Dive team puts together strong performanc­e in Pecos

The Big Spring Swim Team participat­ed in their seventh meet of the season and second meet of the year that was held in Pecos last weekend. The schools that participat­ed were Big Spring, Lubbock Coronado and Lubbock Monterey. It was an overall strong day in the pool for Big Spring as a team with the girls finishing second (85.5) behind Lubbock Coronado (98) and the boys were victorious (121) over both Lubbock Monterey (57) and Lubbock Coronado (16). This meant that the Steers and Lady Steers finished first (206.5) in the combined team scores in front of Coronado (114) and Monterey (71.5). The next time the Big Spring swim team will take to the pool is Dec. 1 in Abilene at McMurry University for a Double Dual meet with Abilene High and Abilene-Cooper.

The following are the results for Big Spring's swimmers from the Pecos Tri-Meet this past weekend out west:

In the Girls' 200-Yard medley relay, the quartet of freshman Arely Cruz-Garcia, sophomore Naomi Reyes, freshman Katherine Greene and sophomore Malaki Vaughn finished in second-place with a final time of 2:22.54.

In the Boys' 200-Yard medley relay, the group of sophomore David Summers, sophomore Ismael Castillo, senior Manuel Castillo and sophomore Toby Phillips took home the gold in that race on the day (2:12.90).

In the Girls' 200-Yard Freestyle, sophomore Jayda Overton finished in third-place with a strong performanc­e (2:52.72). Her teammate, freshman Katherine Greene (5th, 3:00.78), rounded out the top five for that particular race.

Freshman Ethan Barker finished fourth in the Boys' 200-Yard Freestyle (3:13.62) and was the only

Steer swimmer to place in the event.

Sophomore David Summers was the only Steer or Lady Steer to compete in the 200-Yard IM and was able to finish in first-place (2:54.10).

Sophomore Malaki Vaughn finished in first-place in the Girls' 50-Yard Freestyle with a final time of 29.82 seconds. Her teammates Brooklynne Heffle (5th, 35.12) and Steffany Pina Arment (7th, 39.21) also finished in the Top 10 performers for that specific race.

In the Boys' 50-Yard Freestyle, Manuel Castillo (1st, 25.33) was the top Steer finisher. Fellow Steer swimmers Ismael Castillo (2nd, 30.16), Toby Phillips (4th, 32.45), and Carson Millsap (5th, 33.10) also placed in the Top Five.

Freshman Katherine Greene finished in firstplace (1:36.06) in the Girls' 100-Yard Butterfly as there was no competitio­n for her to go head-to-head against.

Senior Manuel Castillo was the only Steer competitor in the Boys' 100-Yard Butterfly and finished in first-place (1:04.68) over Anthony Lucero from Lubbock Monterey (1:16.06).

Sophomore swimmer Malaki Vaughn finished infirst-place (1:04.77) of the Girls' 100-Yard Freestyle. Her teammates Naomi Reyes (2nd, 1:04.96) and Jayda Overton (6th, 1:20.37) all finished inside the Top 10.

Carson Millsap finished third in the Boys' 100 Yard Freestyle with a final time of 1:15.73. His teammate, freshman Matthew Nieves, finished fourth with a time of 1:27.70.

Cruz-Garcia was the only Lady Steer swimmer to participat­e in the Girls 500-Yard Freestyle race and finished in 7:05.46.

Two of the three swimmers to take part in the Boys' 500-Yard Freestyle race were from Big Spring. They ended up finishing in second (Pantoja-Strickland, 6:44.96) and third-place (Griffith, 7:06.07).

The group of Naomi Reyes (48.86), Malaki Vaughn (15.28), Jayda Overton (56.74), and Arely Cruz-Garcia (29.37) took home second-place in the Girls' 200Yard Freestyle Relay with a total time of 2:30.25.

Big Spring finished first in the Boys' 200-Yard Freestyle Relay with the grouping of David Summers, Christian Pantoja-Strickland, Ismael Castillo, and Manuel Castillo (1:54.78). Ethan Barker, Matthew Nieves, Carson Millsap, and Morgan Griffith finished in third with a time of 2:23.83.

Cruz-Garcia finished in first-place (1:21.17) in the Girls' 100-Yard Backstroke. Heffle finished behind her as she tied with a Lubbock Monterey swimmer for third-place (1:36.69). On the boys' side, PantojaStr­ickland placed second (1:19.76) while Summers placed third (1:20.58) and Barker finished in fourth (1:41.71).

Naomi Reyes finished in second-place in the Girls' 100-Yard Breaststro­ke (1:28.53), while Pina Arment was disqualifi­ed. On the boys' side, Ismael Castillo (2nd, 1:27.94), Griffith (3rd, 1:38.10), and Nieves (4th, 1:52.88) rounded out the race.

Lastly, the grouping of Overton, Heffle, Pina Arment and Greene finished in second-place in the Girls' 400-Yard Freestyle Relay (5:34.44). On the boys' side, the quartet of Pantoja-Strickland, Phillips, Griffith and Millsap were the only group to race and finished in first-place (4:57.72) to close out Big Spring's strong day in the pool.

Big Spring's divers took the pool last Friday and they also finished strong from the diving board. Toby Phillips placed in second (211.10) and PantojaStr­ickland finished third (185.05). Vaughn placed in third (212.60) on the girls' side of the competitio­n.
