Bulldogettes earn wins over 4A Ft. Stockton, Sweetwater

- Special to the Herald

The Coahoma Bulldogettes improved to 5-2 on the season after a couple of wins over two 4-A teams this past weekend.

The two hour and 20 minute drive to Fort Stockton on Friday didn’t seem to impact the Bulldogettes, who beat the Lady Panthers 50-30. MaKynlee Overton had a game high of 22 points.

Back at home on Saturday, the Bulldogettes

squeaked out a 53-50 win against the Sweetwater Lady Mustangs in a highly contested game. Coahoma held a slim lead throughout most of the game until Sweetwater hit a hot streak, which began in the last two minutes of the third quarter and continued through fourth, to erase a seven point deficit.

“We didn’t take care of the basketball like we should have and made some silly turnovers, but then we got it back together and got the win,” said Bulldogettes Head Basketball Coach Jim Kinnear. “That says a lot about the girls. They could have easily folded their tent when they got behind, but they didn’t. They kept battling, and because of that, we hit some key free throws, and we got a victory.”

With the foul count high for both teams, discipline was key to Coahoma’s win. The Bulldogettes nailed 14 out of 18 penalty shots while only giving the Lady Mustangs six chances at the charity strip. Sweetwater converted four of their shots.

Under intense pressure as the game clock ticked down, seniors Julia Cox, Overton, and Kenzi Canales were rock solid at the free throw line. With 1:06 left in the game, Canales converted one of two free throws to tie the game at 48-48, and shortly after J. Cox nailed a field goal to push Coahoma over by two points.

Overton padded the lead by three more penalty baskets leaving just 16.4 seconds left in the game. The Lady Mustangs were able to convert one more field goal just before the buzzer sounded, but it wasn’t enough to save the game.

J. Cox led Coahoma in points with 17, and she also converted eight of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter. Overton had 14 points and nailed five of six free throws in the fourth quarter.
