Patrick Collins Carter of Big Spring, Texas, passed away Dec. 20, 2020, at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.

Pat was a Christian and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church of Big Spring. Pat was born April 3, 1944, to Arthur L. and Vernie Jo Carter.

He spent most of his younger years around the Rotan, Texas area. He attended schools at Rotan, Haskell and Western Texas College at Snyder. Pat’s favorite pastime was visiting with people. He was always smiling and friendly, and loved getting to know people’s names, where they were from, what they did for a living, and anything else that was a focal point of their lives. He was sometimes called a “professional visitor” by his wife, Leona. He loved to work security for Jody Nix at the Stampede, where he came in contact with a lot of people from many different lifestyles, and it gave him a good opportunity to get acquainted with them. Pat had a beautiful singing voice.

He loved to sing and play guitar for any occasion and for anyone who would listen. He was choir director at First Methodist Church of Roscoe and First Christian Church of Sweetwater until moving from Sweetwater to Big Spring, Texas, in 2000, to go to work for the Howard County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff, and later promoted to criminal investigation. He worked for the security department of the Big Spring State Hospital for

three years before he retired.

He found that retirement did not work well for him, so he received his certificate as a Civil Process Server, thus giving him the opportunity to remain in contact with his favorite thing…”people.” He worked for several attorneys in Big Spring as well as the Dallas and Midland areas. Pat loved his country, and served in both the Army and Navy. He enjoyed wearing patriotic caps, t-shirts, and flying the American flag!

He would gladly share a cap with anyone who wanted one. He was a very happy man and saw no benefit in not wearing a smile or making someone’s day better. He will be missed and he knew he was loved.

Pat and Leona Swafford Carter were married in Sweetwater on Aug. 14, 1981. Pat is survived by his loving wife Leona; his three children; Keri Carter, Kendall Carter and wife Julie, and Todd Snyder and wife Lana; Six grandchildren and on great-grandchild; Brothers Mike Carter and Terry Carter; Aunt and Uncle James and Darlene Carter; Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins that he loved dearly and more friends than can be counted. There will be no services at this time due to Covid19.

A celebration of Pat’s life will follow in the Spring or Summer. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.

In lieu of flowers, please give to the church or charity of your choice. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mccoyfh.com.
