Eagle’s Lodge gives back to the community

- Herald Contributing Writer

Giving is the reason for the season and Big Spring residents know how to do just that. On Saturday, Dec. 19, the Fraternal order of Eagles Lodge 3188's members distributed toys, food and also a check to another local charity. According to Scott Engelson, Eagles Lodge 3188 Trustee, $15,000 was raised to help make Christmas a little more joyful for many local families.

The “Eagles Christmas for Kids” disbursement took place at the lodge building, located at 703 West 3rd Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Families were given food for their holiday meal and gifts for their kids. There was also a special visit from Santa. According to Engleson, 46 families, including 110 children were helped.

“Our motto is ‘People helping People' and that's what we do,” said Engelson.

Engelson talked about the blessing it was to see the excited kids as they received the toys, and their faces lite up when Santa arrived for a visit and a picture.

The giving didn't stop there. Also in the morning, around 11 a.m., Scott Engelson presented a $2500 check on behalf of Eagles Lodge 3188 to St. Vincent de Paul's Chapter President, Rosario Medrano, for their Food bank. St. Vincent de Paul is located at 1009 Hearn Street and gives out regular assistance to needy families including food and other assistance such as rent, utilities, medical and gas vouchers. For more information on St. Vincent de Paul's program or for an emergency need, call 432-606-5000 or email SVDP2018@yahoo.com.

This was the second year for “Eagles Christmas for Kids”, but the Eagles Lodge has been partnering with other community partners for the past 20 years in making Christmas joyful for kids and families.

“We also do a lot of benefits to raise money for various individual needs,” Engelson said.
