Now that we have moved past football season in Howard County, the post-season honors and recognitions are beginning to come in for football and the other fall sports. The Texas High School Coaches Association recently compiled their Football Academic All-State Teams and 10 student-athletes from Howard County landed on those prestigious teams. The THSCA bases its honor on the following areas: GPA, class rank, and ACT/SAT score.

From Coahoma, a total of nine players and trainers were recognized for their work off the field and in the classroom by the state organization.

Bulldog players Seth Brooks, Colin Daniels, Noah Dials, Bryden Fontana, Brenner Gartman, Grayson Glidewell, and Kolt Redden were honored, as well as CHS trainers MaKynlee Overton and Tanner Atkins. All of them were named to one the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Football Academic All-State Teams and should feel a great sense of accomplishment. All of those student-athletes have shown the dedication to be successful both on the field and in the classroom.

“This is a big honor and a testament to these kids taking care of their business in the classroom,” Coahoma ISD Athletic Director Chris Joslin said. “These are excellent student leaders who work hard both on the field and in their academic studies, and it’s a well deserved honor for them to be recognized as among the top academic student-athletes in the state.”

Glidewell was the lone First Team selection for the Bulldogs. Atkins, Brooks, Daniels, Fontana, and Overton were all Second Team selections. Dials, Gartman, and Redden were all chosen as Honorable Mentions.

From Forsan, Cameron Allen was the lone Buffalo to find a spot on an Academic AllState Team as an Honorable Mention.

All of these student-athletes did a tremendous job of representing for their schools and Howard County.

“Education is a priority over and sport because without a mind you can’t contribute to society,” PGA golfer Tiger Woods once said.

“Sports programs are an important part of young people’s lives but should never overshadow the true purpose of high school and that is to earn a diploma,” Indiana high school football coaching legend George M. Gilbert said in his book.

Athletes from all over the country strive to succeed in both the classroom and at their respective sports. The reality is that only a special group of student-athletes excel enough to reach that accomplishment.

Coahoma has led the way during the fall in terms of All-Academic selections and are a program that has shown they show just as much commitment to their schoolwork as they do to their game plan.

Congratulations to all of the selections.
