Big Spring Powerlifti­ng teams compete in Eldorado

The Big Spring Steers powerlifti­ng teams traveled to Eldorado this past weekend Sat, Feb 21. Both the boys and girls team would compete. After a week full of frozen temps and school closures, it was time for the Power Lifting teams to take the stage. The lady steers have finished in the top three in every event of the year, and this would be no different as the young women would finish third. In the 132 could Divison, Gisselle Holguin would take seventh place, and Valerie Hernandez finished tenth. The 145-pound class featured Alandra Juarez, who came in fourth. Melanie Aguilar followed right behind her with a fifth-place finish. The 165 division would be April Caldwell capturing a fifth-place finish, followed by her teammate Adali Hernandez who finished in sixth. Amaiya Hernandez rounded out the division by finishing ninth. The lady steers had three competitor­s in the 181-pound class and would have all three young lady's finish in the top five. Xylanase Walker came in second, Abewi Delgado finished fourth, and Kayen Johnson would finish in fifth. Rebecca Rodriguez would finish third in her class of 220. It was Jhaniah Johnson who would win her 259 division, taking the top spot.

The lady Steers ended up with nine qualifiers for the Regionals. Jocelyn Gonzales, Jhaniah Johnson, Ashlin Calvino, Xilanae Walker, Giselle Holguin, Rebecca Rodriguez, Kayen Johnson, Abewi Delgado, and Valerie Hernandez will all get their chance to compete in Monahans on Mar 6.

The Boy's team would take first place in the meet. Making it the third team Championsh­ip of the year. Conner Andrae finished first in his weight division of 132. Josh Lopez continued the hot streak taking the top position in the 148 divisions. He would be followed by Kenny Richardson with a second-place finish. Phillip Martinez would come in third, and Jack Hamby would round out the steers competitor­s at that division, finishing fifth. In the 181 class, the Steers had three competitor­s in this division. Shawn Mendoza took second place, Karl Karabanoff placed fifth, and Anthony Gonzalez placed eighth. That would bring up Rogelio Cervantes, who came in the second spot in his division of 198. Kyle Warren finished fourth. Raleigh Eddington rounded out the Steers's dominance by taking a second-place finish in his class of 242.
