- By DUSTIN POPE Herald Sports Writer

The Big Spring Steers Baseball team took to the Diamond this past weekend Mar. 4-6 for the Levelland Line drive Baseball Classic. The Steers played five games during the three-day tournament, going 3 and 2 for those games.

The Steers opened up play facing the Hereford Whitefaces; the opening-round game was held in Lubbock. Eli Cobos took the bump to lead off the pay at pitcher for the Steers. The young Steer pitcher had an efficient first inning, allowing a couple of walks, and only one run, to give Hereford the early lead 1 to 0. The Steere bats started slowly in the bottom of the First, not really getting any rhythm going ending the inning with a runner on base but no runs.

The top of the second found Hereford enjoying the one-run lead. Cobos had a very impressive inning of work, going three up and three down, making short work of the second's top. The Steer bats came alive at the bottom of the second. Isaiah Diaz started things when he would reach an error by the third baseman allowing him to reach first. Ricky Escovedo came up next and singled on a hard-hit line drive single moving Diaz over to third on the play. Eli Cobos then came to the plate and showed patience to earn a walk to load the bases; courtesy runner Isaiah Solis came in to run for pitcher Cobos at first base. After a strikeout, it would bring up Marcos Paredez to the plate. Paredez got hit by a pitch driving in the first run of the day for the Steers and tying the game at one-all. Jose Cantu keeps the line moving when the Steer drove in a run on a sacrifice fly giving Big Spring their first lead of the day. Maverick Yanez then worked a walk. Joshua Miramontes then pushed two runs across the plate with a single one, increasing the to 4 to 1. The Steers put one more on the inning board, extending the lead 5 to 1 after two innings of play.

In the third inning, the Hereford Whitefaces showed they came to play as they battled back in their half of the inning, scoring six runs taking the lead back from the Steers 7 to 5. Big Spring would attempt to answer back when they had their chance at the plate. The steers were able to push one run across to tighten up the Hereford lead 6 to 7.

For the next few innings, both teams would battle back and forth, not allowing any runs. In the top of the Sixth inning, Hereford showed that they were here to play, as the Whitefaces scored two more runs increasing the lead 8 to 6. Due to tournament time limits, the Steers knew this would be their last at-bat of the game. They found there self down by two runs down to their last three outs. That's when this Steer passion would make its presence. The inning started with a quick out, leaving only two outs for the steers to make a comeback. Jose Cantu was the first to get on base with a single, giving the Steers life. They then had ground out. With one person on the base and down to their final strike, the future looked bleak for the young Steers. Joshua

Miramontes battled in the box earning a walk to keep the Steers alive. That put runners on first and second, down to their last out when Gabriel Baeza stepped into the batter's box. With the game in his hands, the young Baeza would not disappoint. On a 0-1 pitch, Baeza would smash a game-winning three-run Home Run to win the Steers' game dramatically. It was a huge moment in a great baseball game. Gabriel Baeza told me, "he just wanted to take a good approach at the plate; I just wanted to help out the team the best I could," Baeza said, "I knew it was gone as soon as I hit it. It was a great feeling!" After what was one of the most exciting games this team has played this year, the day was not over.

The second game of the day found the Steers taking on the Dalhart Golden Wolves; they held this game in Shallowater. This game featured Great pitching and a lot of offense from the Steers as they destroyed Dalhart 14 to 0.

Isaiah Solis took to the mound in the Steers's second game of the day, and boy did the young man deliver. Solis pitched five innings, allowing two hits and zero runs in a dominating performance.

The top of the first began with Big Spring not getting much done with the bats as they got a runner in the base but could not score a run. Solis took the mound to start his day; he would cruise through his inning of work easily, not allowing any runs to score.

The top of the second is where the Steers blew open the game with an eight-run inning. The inning of play began with Eli Cobos singling. Braxton Sizenbach then reached an error to get on base and moving Cobos to second. Pablito Dehoyos scored two on a hard-hit single of his own, driving the game's first two runs in. Jose Cantu kept the momentum going as he, too, drove in a run with a hard-hit single. Maverick Yanez then came in and kept the hit train going with yet another single driving in Cantu, bringing the score to 4 to 0. Joshua Miramontes would step up to the plate and blast a two-run home run bringing the lead to 6 to 0. The Steers would put two more runs on the board, ending the inning 8 to 0.

Solis kept dealing in his performance, mowing the batters down with ease. The Steers would go on to tack on 2 runs in the third and four more runs in the fourth inning; The Game would be called after five innings, with the Steers having a 14 to 0 blowout. The game would end the play on the day. The steers would still have three more games to play ahead of the two on Friday and one game on Saturday.

Friday morning rolled around and found the Big Spring Steers taking on the Dalhart Golden Wolves once again. They dominated Dalhart the previous day, 14 to 0. This time they would take the domination a step further by winning this game by 24 to 2. Making that 38 runs scored against Dalhart in just two games.

Joshua Miramontes took the mound in the third game of the tournament. He had an easy first inning of work working a clean three up three down inning. The Steers wasted no time putting up runs in this game. Maverick Yanez started the game in style with a hard-hit single to shortstop. Joshua Miramontes then came up a smashed another single. Isaiah Diaz slammed a double to left field, scoring one, opening up the scoring of the day 1 to 0. Eli Cobos then got hit by a pitch loading the bases. Bringing Braxton Sizenbach to the plate, and man, the young Steer would deliver, as Sizenbach belted a Grand Slam Home Run to Centerfield, clearing the bases driving in 4 runs.

Dalhart would finally find the scoreboard in the top of the second, making the score 5 to 1. The Steers were not done dominating with the bats, and They went on to put up eight more runs in the bottom of the inning and tacking on 11 more in the bottom of the third. It was a complete blowout as the Steers would end the game with 24 to 2. The game was total dominance highlighted by Braxton Sizenbach and his Grand Slam Home Run; he ended the day having six RBI.

The Steers would start the tournament at 3-0. Unfortunately, they would lose the Friday afternoon game against Dumas. The Steers held the lead for most of the game but fell late in the game, losing their first one of the tournament by a score of 9 to 7.

To close out the tournament, the Steers took on Canyon, Back in Shallowater. The Steers had a rough game losing 17 to 2, bringing their tournament record to 3 and 2.

All and all, it was a good tournament for the

Steers as they have plenty to be proud of. These boys could be something special to watch as this season unfolds. They have power at the plate, show patience when they need to take a walk, and have the arms to prevent runs. The Steers record stands at 7-3-1; next up for the Young Steers is a Tuesday game at

Steer Park at 7:00 to take on the Fort Stockton

Panthers. Come out and support these boys and cheer them on to victory.
