Steers Fall to Snyder 11 to 10 in District game

- By DUSTIN POPE

The Big Spring Steers traveled 43 miles North East down HWY 350 Tuesday night to take on their arch-rival and District foe the Snyder Tigers. The game ended up being a devastating loss for the Steers baseball team. They could not hold a 9 to lead, losing in the end 11 to 10 in what could only be described as a heartbreaking loss.

The Steers started the game off hot; they got the ball rolling early on in the game. They could get runners on base early and score three runs in the top half of the first inning, giving themselves an early 3 to 0 lead. Kyler Seymore took the mound and was impressive early on, as he didn't allow the Tigers to answer back and kept them off the scoreboard in the first.

Leading 3 to 0 after one inning, the Steers went right back to work in the second inning. Pablito Dehoyos lead off the inning with a single. Jose Cantu would follow with a single of his own. Placing runners at first and second with no outs. Both Dehoyos and Cantu would advance a base on a wild pitch by the Tiger pitcher. A few pitches later, Dehoyos came across to score on an error to extend the lead to 4 to 0. Leadoff man Maverick Yanez then worked a walk. That brought up Star player Josh Miramontes; he would advance the runners and drive Cantu across bring the score up to 5 to 0. Isaiah Diaz drove in Yanez on a hard-hit single of his own, pushing the lead to 5 to 0. Rickey Escovedo then stepped to the box and delivered a single of his own scoring Miramontes. The Steers ended the second inning leading 7 to 0.

The Steers went on to put up two more runs in the top of the fourth when Escovedo narrowly missed a Home Run but got a triple out of it. The Snyder Tigers finally put their first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth.

The fifth inning was the game breaker for the Steers as Snyder put together a nine-run inning. The Steers struggled to throw strikes in the inning, walking six batters, hitting three batters on the inning that helped the Tigers have such a big inning. After the damage was done, the Tigers had the lead of 11 to 9.

Big Spring tried to battle back, never giving up as they had a runner get to third base in the top of the sixth, only to have him gunned down at the plate by a good throw from the Tiger

Centerfielder on a pop fly. The Steers had one more shot in the top of the seventh, they did push across one run to make it a one-run game, but they ultimately fell short in the end.

This loss makes the Steers 1-3 in District play. This was a very tough loss for the team as they let a lead slip away, but the team kept fighting. They didn't give up when they could have easily thrown in the towel after the big fifth inning. The Steers next face Sweetwater at Steer park first pitch is scheduled for 7:33. Let us all come out to show our support for this team.
