Both Big Spring Track teams shine in District Meet, advance to are

The Big Spring Steers track team participat­ed in the District Track Meet this past weekend, March, in Snyder. The boys and girls had a great showing. The Boys finished in First, and the Lady Steers placed Third. Both teams earned the right to compete in the Area Track Meet held in Canyon at the West Texas A&M track Thursday, April 15.

The Lady steers got off to a good start when Kyleena Hughes finished in Fifth place in the 100-meter dash. She would be followed by Alex Enriquez, who finished in sixth. In the 200 Meter, The Lady Steers had two competitor­s. Kyla Mathews finished in third place with 27.52, and Gracie King came in fourth with a 27.58. Elisabeth Jones had a second-place finish in the 400 meters run with a great time of 1:03.46. Elaina Arrendondo finished with a time of 1:07.07, good enough to take home eighth place. The Lady Steers had three ladies in the 800 meters, Elisabeth Jones finished in sixth, Facility Calderon was right behind her with a seventh-place finish, and Skylyn Rivera placed 12th. In the 1600 meter run, Erin Mendoza had a time of 6:13.31 to take home fifth. Felicity Yanez finished in eighth with a 6:43.96, and teammate Skyln Rivera had a ninth-place finish with a 6:55.96. Alexa Mehan took second place in the 100-meter Hurdles with a blazing time of 17:50, Katelyn Haynie finished in sixth with a 19:56. In the 300 meter Hurdles, Alexa Mehan finished in the top three with a third-place finish with a time of 52.98. The relay races kicked off with the 4x100 meter relay. The Lady Steer team comprised Makenna Valle, Alex Enriques, Alexa Mehan, and Kyleena Hughes. The team ran hard and finished in fifth with a 53.78. In the 4x200 meter relay, Big Spring fielded Makenna Valle, Kyla Mathews, Falcity Calderon, and Kyleena Hughes. The lady Steer ran an impressive time of 1:49.24 to come in second place overall. The Track meets marquee event, the 4x400 meter relay, Kyla Mathews, Facility Calderon, Elaina Arrendondo, and Elisabeth Jones came in first amazing time of 4:20.17, over seven seconds faster than the second-place team.

After the combined effort over all the track events, the Lady Steers finished in third place overall in the team standings. The third-place finish is good enough to keep the Lady Steers season going as they will have the chance to run in the Area track meet.

The Boys team kicked off their day of track events with the 100 Meter dash. Abram Jackson ran a 12.10, good enough for fourth; he was followed by teammate Saquan Fizer who finished fifth with a 12.38. Abram Jackson also ran in the 200-meter dash for the Steers. Jackson ran a time of 24.73, good enough for the Steer to Finnish in sixth place. The Steers had three runners competing in the 400-meter dash on the day. William Woolverton came in third with an excellent time of 52.66, Jabez Jones placed sixth, running a 54.70, and Josh Delacruz rounded out the runners with a seventh-place finish with a time of 55.03. The Boys also had three competitor­s running in the 800 Meter run on the day. Adrain Solis placed third with a 2:04.30, only to be followed by Steer teammate Roman Perez running a 2:05.20; Brandon Rodgers finished in eight for the Steers with a 2:10.49. The 1600 Meter run is where the Steers shinned as they had three runners compete, and they would finish second, third, and fourth. Roman Perez ran a 4:41.96 to finish second. Isaac Gonzales had a time of 4:49.19 for third, and his teammate Adrian Solis finished just seconds behind for fourth with a time of 4:49.22. It was a very impressive showing for all the Boys in the race. This brought us to the relay races. The Steers team of Devin Manning, Vincent Ortiz, Saquan Fizer, and Isaiah Johnson competed in the 4x100 meter relay, running 44.57; the time was good enough for Steers to place in third. In the 4x200, the Steers had Devin Manning, Saquan Fiser, Isiah Johnson, and Zaire Franklin. The relay team ran an impressive 1:34.04 to take home third place in the race. The Steers rounded out the day's completion in the always exciting 4x400 relay. Josh Delacruz, Adrian Solis, Zeyaire Franklin, and William Woolverton took third place in the race, running a time of 3:30.91.

The Steers Boys Team took home first place in the overall team standings setting the boys up for a nice run in the are Track meet.

For sure, both the Lady Steers and the Boys have a good shot when they travel to Canyon to run in the Area event.
