Community encouraged to continue cleaning up around neighborhoods

Keep Big Spring Beautiful joined with Big Spring residents this past weekend to do a litle Spring Cleaning, at home and in the community. As part of the Texas Trash Off, clean up efforts resulted in 1,440 pounds of trash being collected on Saturday. There were 38 volunteers who signed up as participants of the Saturday efforts.

“We were competing with several different events this year, but we had a good showing and an impact was made regarding the beautification of Big Spring,” Susan McLellan said. “There was a lot going on this weekend, including the Howard College Rodeo and the Big Spring

Howard College students and staff joined together to take part in the Texas Trash Off efforts. They collected 25 bags of trash during their clean up. prom, but we had groups, families and businesses take a little bit of their day and help clean up their neighborhoods.”

Those taking part in the Trash Off were able to pick up bags at the Chamber on Friday morning and then started cleaning Saturday morning. During the event there were 56 bags of trash collected along with numerous large bulk items, including water heaters, doors, mattresses and other items. In addition to the Trash Off event this past Saturday, a couple months ago the City of Big Spring held an E-waste collection day which allowed residents to dump old, unused electronic devices of all sorts.

“Howard College students worked on gathering trash around the campus on Friday. They were able to collect 25 bags of trash through their efforts,” she said. “We are

thankful for all those who took the time to help us clean up the different neighborhoods and main streets this past weekend.”

McLellan continued, “The Texas Trash Off will be taking place all month long, so if you weren’t able to join us on Saturday, take some time and pick up trash around your neighborhood

or come out and join us for Toasty Tuesdays. It’s everyone’s job to pick up trash; our view, our city.”

For those wanting to get involved with more clean up efforts, Keep Big Spring Beautiful meets the first Monday of the month at noon in the Cactus Room at Howard College.
