Gifted Athlete, Actor, and Family Man – Dickie Wrightsil Big Spring High School Class of ’81

Before graduating from BSHS in 1981, Dickie Wrightsil attended Lakeview Elementary School and then Runnels Junior High while growing up on Ohio Street. Dickie is currently living in California, where he enjoys a successful acting career. Dickie was the first African American to appear in a Mercedes Benz Commercial, has appeared in more than 50 National Commercial­s as well as movies for both television and film, and Wrightsil is a business owner. He currently serves on several boards and started a charity, Tee Times 4 Tots, that has provided hundreds of gifts at

Christmas for needy children.

While attending Big Spring High School, Wrightsil was a member of the Meistersin­gers all four years and was elected the Sophomore Class President. Dickie was a member of the Student Council and the National Honor Society. In addition to his successes off the field, he was also a captain of his varsity basketball team and was selected for the AllDistric­t Baseball team.

Recently, Wrightsil responded to some questions about his experience growing up in Big Spring and being a Big Spring Steer.

• Which Teacher had the greatest impact on your life and learning? Howell Martin

• What can you share about that relationsh­ip that would be helpful to today’s students and teachers? He was my baseball coach for two years. He taught me just as much about life as he did about baseball. He was about sacrifice and dedication. My senior year, my batting average was .700. In baseball, that’s exceptiona­l. I attribute my success to his coaching.

• Reflecting on your days as a Big Spring ISD student, what is one of your favorite memories?

I know it may sound funny but graduation. It was a definitive example of what hard work and perseveran­ce can bring. Holding that diploma was priceless.

• What advice do you have for current students?

Stay focused. Listen to those who are in positions to help you learn. Treat
