Crossroads Housing Development
Editor’s Note: The Big Spring Area Community Foundation has supported the community for many years, in addition to scholarships, there have been some small business grants awarded to further the mission of non-profits in the community. Each week the Big Spring Herald will partner with the BSACF to highlight these non-profits and the work they are doing.
The Big Spring Area Community Foundation provides grants to local non-profit agencies. The Crossroads Housing Development Corporation applied for and received a BSACF grant last spring. Anna Scott, a Project Coordinator with Crossroads, recently provided the Foundation with a report on her organization's progress and was kind enough to answer some questions that would be of interest to residents of the Big Spring Area.
The Big Spring Area Community Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to the organization this past cycle.
How long has your organization been operating in the Big Spring Area?
Crossroads Housing Development Corporation was founded in Big Spring in 1999. We worked exclusively in Big Spring for the first four years of our operation and then shifted our focus to Low Income Housing Tax Credit Programs around Texas to fund ourselves. We returned our focus to Big Spring and Howard County in 2020.
What is your organization’s purpose, and what is it you hope to do for our community?
Our purpose is to assist in creating, managing, and developing affordable housing. We hope to better the community by renovating derelict houses around town and transforming them into affordable housing for low-income families.
Specifically, how has your organization used the grant money it received from the Big Spring Area Community Foundation to reach its goals?
The grant money we've received will help us pay for the architect we've contracted to assist us in optimizing three of our properties and a new roof on one of our properties. The grant is helping us reach our goal of producing affordable housing by reducing the burden of renovation and developmental costs.
What is exciting about your organization’s future that others need to know about?
Our future is very exciting because we are slowly and surely helping neighborhoods improve. We're taking the worst houses on the blocks and breathing new life into them. These houses are intended to become homes for low-income families, not just more rent houses. We're aiming to raise the rate of
