Week 7: Steers look to stay hot. Coahoma, and Forsan kick off district play

- By DUSTIN POPE Herald Sports Writer

It's Friday night, football fans! So, of course, that means one thing down in these parts, and that is Friday Night Lights! This week we are back to all three of our local teams in action, so we have a full slate of what should be some good football games ahead of us.

We will start with the 5-1 Big Spring Steers. Big Spring will have a very long road trip tonight as they will travel to Pampa to take on the Pampa Harvesters, who are also 5-1 on the year. Big Spring is coming off three straight victories after they dropped the game to Monahans. The Steers are coming off a dominant win over Littlefield last week as they won the game 49-27 at Memorial Stadium. Quarterback Gabriel Baeza, who had a monster game, led them. He accounted for 532 total yards offense and seven touchdowns. The performance of Baeza has got the attention of Dave Campbell's High School Football. As a result, they have nominated Baeza for Mr. Texas player of the week. The Steers will face a very tough test this week as they will not only have to battle a very long road trip, but they will have to play a very gamer Pampa Harvesters. Pampa comes into this matchup also sporting a 5-1 record. Pampa lost its first game of the season to Elk City, then they have rolled off five straight victories, including a very close match against Perryton 44-41 last week. A very good running back in which the Pampa offense goes through leads Pampa. For the Steers to have a shot in this game, they must contain this RB and, of course, use their dynamic offense to put pressure on the Harvester's defense. While this will be the toughest matchup for the Steers, I think they are playing too good of the ball right now and lead by Gabriel Baeza; I don't see this team being stopped. Their game will be in Pampa, and they set kickoff for 7 P.M.

Next up, we have your Forsan Buffaloes. The Buffs have a 5-0 record and are ranked #10 in Texas in 2A Division 1. Forsan has been playing some great football throughout the season, and they have earned that prestigious #10 team in the state. The Buffs are coming off a bye week last week as they prepared for the start of district play this week. Forsan will match up with the Colorado City Wolves, who come into this game with a 0-5 record. The Wolves are on a losing skid that reaches over 20 straight games. While on paper, this should be a blowout, and yes, I expect that from this Buffaloes team. Coach Phillips will not let this team look past any opponent, and he will have this team ready to play on full cylinders. The game will be in Colorado City, and kickoff will be at 7:30 P.M.

The Coahoma Bulldogs are also coming off of their bye week as they too prepare for district play. The

Bulldogs are 2-3 on the season and have had their difficulties this season. I'm sure they took the week off to fix the minor problems they have been having. Unfortunately, it won't get any easier for the Bulldogs tonight as they open up district play against the 5-0 Idalou Wildcats. Idalou also comes into this game with a #10 ranking. This will be a stiff test for a Bulldog team, but I know Coach Joslyn will have these boys ready to go when they step on the field tonight. This game will be at Coahoma home field, and kickoff will be at 7:30 P.M.

It should be another Friday night filled with some great local football. We have some teams that are rolling right now, and we have some trying to find themselves, but that's what makes this game so great anyone can win on any day. So if you are traveling this Friday, please do so safely, and we pray for the safe return for all the fans and teams alike. As always, ill have a short breakdown of all three games in the Saturday edition of the Big Spring Herald; until then, enjoy some football.
