Veterans Day events and closures

Local government­al entities and businesses have announced their schedule surroundin­g Veterans Day, which is Thursday.

• The Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez State Veterans Home, located at 1809 U.S. Hwy. 87 will hold a Veterans Day observance at 8:45 a.m.

• Moss Elementary School will hold a Veterans Day Celebratio­n including a performanc­e by the school's secondgrad­ers at 9:15 a.m.

• Scenic Mountain Medical Center will host a luncheon for Howard County veterans, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The meal will be served in the first floor classroom at the hospital, located at 1601 W. 11th Place.

• Goliad Elementary School will hold a Veterans Day Celebratio­n at 2 p.m.

• City of Big Spring offices will be closed Thursday, according to a press release issued by City Public Works Director Shane Bowles. All city offices, including the Sanitation and Landfill offices, will be closed all day Thursday, and will reopen at 8 a.m. on Friday.

For those whose garbage is usually collected on Thursdays, crews will collect their garbage on Wednesday this week.

City police, fire and EMS will continue to provide law enforcemen­t and emergency services, though offices for those department­s will be closed.

• County Judge Kathryn Wiseman issued a similar press release relating to Howard County. According to the release, the county will close all offices on Thursday, and those offices will reopen as usual on Friday.

According to the county press release, the administra­tive offices at the Howard County Sheriff's Department will be closed, but the Sheriff's Department will continue to provide law enforcemen­t services as normal.

• Labor Day is a U.S. Post Office holiday; mail will not be delivered Thursday, and the post office counter will be closed, although the lobby, with access to post office boxes and mail slots will remain open.

• All Howard County schools will remain open, including Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan public schools; local private schools including Runnels Academy, New Hope Christian Academy and Pre-School, and Maranatha Baptist Academy; and Howard College.

• Most Howard County banks and credit unions will be closed Thursday, but hold normal hours both Wednesday preceding, and Friday following, the holiday. This includes Citizens Federal Credit Union, Big Spring Education Federal Credit Union, Cosden Federal Credit Union, Wells Fargo, State National Bank, Western Bank, Prosperity Bank, Lone Star State Bank, and PNC Bank.

Two local financial institutio­ns report they will remain open Thursday: Complex Community Federal Credit Union, and Woodforest Bank (located inside Wal-Mart).

• Wal-Mart, H-E-B and Porter's grocery stores will remain open with regular hours on Thursday.
