Lady Hawk Basketball team had to much to overcome against a game Western Texas team

- Special to the Herald

It was a homecoming of sorts for Clarissa Krum; for John Ishee, it was let's go down fighting on this sinking ship.

Krum was making a return to her old stomping grounds when she guided this Western Texas College team into Dorothy Garrett Coliseum to take on the Ishee's Lady Hawks. Both teams needed a conference win, dropping their league openers Wednesday. WTC lost to Clarendon 64-54; Howard had to forfeit it league opener against Midland College because of Covid.

The outcome wasn't hard to figure out. Howard had only five players from its normal 14 team roster. The rest are waiting to test again to see if they come out negative.

So you add three student athletes to the five you have, and Ishee was ready to come out scrapping .

It was interesting for a while but the Lady Westerners came away with a 71-34 victory.

Coach Ishee, a coaching veteran of more than 30 years, has seen troubled waters during his day. He was adamant about this. He wanted to play. And play they did. Thanks to some long range bombing by Daysha Tijerina and Daniela Perdomo Howard only trailed 35-23 at the half.

Ishee used one of his reserves. That was Denise Quinoez a student trainer from McCamey. Krum attacked by using all 10 of her players throughout the game. The Lady Hawks just wore down.

It was bitter-sweet for Krum ,who got her first win over Howard College as a head coach. Krum played for Howard during the 20082009 season. She's previously had assistant positions at Lubbock Christian University, Western Teas College and Newman University in Wichita, Ks.

"It was a little nerve wrecking, it was an exciting thing," said Krum. "The thing we with this Covid is number one you have to be careful. We have to hold each other accountable. We knew they (Howard) was undermanned. I had to guard my kids about not taking things for granted. I wanted them to refresh their minds and just play. I'm proud of them."

"It was just tough today," Ishee said. "We were missing 11 girls, two were out with injuries. People ask me why I just didn't forfeit this game. We forfeited the last game. I'm an old school coach, I'm not going to forfeit two games in a row. How can I push these kids and work them hard and then go out there and surrender?

"I guarantee you if we had our players that game would have been totally different. We battled hard for 27 minutes. No subs, that's tough. We didn't give up. We'll go down with the ship."

The Lady Hawks will be at home Saturday when they host Cisco Junior College at 2 p.m.
