Local businesses, government offices announce New Years closures

Local businesses and government offices have announced their hours for the New Years holiday. While local schools remain on winter holiday through the first part of January – Big Spring and Coahoma students return Jan. 5, while Forsan students return Jan. 4 – other local groups have varied hours.

The City of Big Spring offices will be closed Dec. 31 in observance of the holiday. There will be no sanitation pickup on Dec. 31. Thursday's normal routes will be picked up today; while Friday's normal routes will be picked up Thursday. The City Landfill will be closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. All city offices and the landfill will reopen Monday, Jan. 3. Emergency services (police, fire and EMS) will continue normal operations during the holiday.

Howard County offices will be closed Dec. 31 and resume normal business hours Jan. 3. Howard County Sheriff's administra­tive offices will be closed during the holiday, but law enforcemen­t services will operate as normal.

The United States Post Office will be open Friday, Dec. 31, and mail will be delivered as usual. Post Offices will be closed, and regular mail will not be delivered, Saturday, Jan. 1, although Priority Mail Express will be delivered on New Years Day. No mail will be picked up from Post Office mailboxes on Jan. 1.

Several local banks and credit unions have altered schedules in connection with the holiday. Wells Fargo and Lone Star State Bank will close at 4 p.m. on Friday and remain closed on Saturday. Prosperity Bank, Western Bank, PNC Bank and Citizens Federal Credit Union will be open Friday and closed on Saturday. Cosden FCU, Complex Community FCU and Big Spring Education FCU will close Friday and Saturday. Woodforest National Bank, located inside Wal-Mart, will be open until 2 p.m. Friday instead of 5 p.m.

Big Spring's three large grocery stores, Wal-Mart, H-E-B and Porter's, report no changes to their regular schedule due to the holiday.

The Big Spring Herald's offices will be closed Friday, but papers will continue to be delivered Friday and Saturday.
