Coahoma girls open district with a win

- Special to the Herald

COAHOMA — The Bulldogettes overpowered the Odessa Compass Academy Lady Cougars on Tuesday night to start league play with a 66-13 win.

“I was very proud of them,” said Coahoma girls Head Coach Joe Mireles. “They did well especially coming back after a three-day break and then coming off that tournament (Mary Tatum Classic).”

Coahoma took a commanding lead after the first quarter outscoring the Lady Cougars 21-2, but faltered on offense in the second quarter.

“We got sloppy in the second quarter,” Mireles said. “We were throwing the ball away and trying to make things happen that weren't there. They settled down in the second half, and we were able to pull away from them.”

Katelyn Johnson with 10 points and Isabella Cox with eight. Both Bulldogettes nailed two 3-point goals each during the second half of the game.

Next, the Bulldogettes will travel to Crane to face the Lady Birds, the 2021 5-3A district champions.

“They have some girls who are pretty tall, and they have a shooter,” Mireles said. “They are going to be a tough team to play with, but, if we keep doing what we are doing, we will be OK.”

In sub-varsity action, the JV Bulldogettes earned a 23-18 win over Compass after a close game.

The varsity Bulldogettes (1-0, 13-9) will face Crane at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The JV girls' game begins at 5 p.m.
