Big Spring Herald

Attitude of Thanks

- By Dr. Lillian Bohannan Special to the Herald

As most people growing up in the 1940-1960's, families were usually occupied by more that one or two children. We had six in my family. That meant six bags of candy and treats to be shared equally among eight people. We went trick or treating until we were teenagers. Then we got to go escort our little brothers, so we got a share of the candy. We didn't go to “safe stops” because our whole little Northern Nevada town was “safe.” And we didn't take a little lantern pumpkin to be filled with candy, we took a huge grocery sack we could hardly carry back home—six of them.

I remember my fun-loving Daddy would put an old sheet over his head and jump out at our door and scare everyone half out of their own costumes. He did that until one little girl was scared so bad that she screamed all the way back home--next door. Her dad came out and reprimanded my dad. He never did that again.

But now is the month to be thankful, not just for the treats of October harvest This is a month of Thanksliving.

That's right, I said “Thanksliving.” Be thankful on Saturday Nov. 6th, for an extra hour of sleep and remember to set your clocks back an hour. Be thankful for our Pastors on “Pastor appreciation Sunday, Nov. 7th” and don't forget their wives and families. Be thankful for the veterans on Thursday, Nov. 11th who gave their lives for freedom in our country. Then be thankful on November 25th for our God's greatness in allowing us to live in a free country founded on His principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Pursue the happiness with vim, vigor, and vitality. Be thankful for family, friends, and fellowship that day. And even football!

By having an attitude of gratitude during this month, it just might turn our hearts to the One Who made it all possible. Be thankful to Jesus Christ, the Righteous Son of God, Who makes Heaven possible for us. He died for our sin debt in our place so we could have a place in Heaven with Him for ever. Ask Him to be your Saviour, forgive your sin, and begin the greatest “Thanksliving” possible for your

morning for these wonderful devotions: “Morning Meditation Thoughts”. Also tune in every Sunday morning at 8:30 to listen to the Lutheran Hour.
