Gonzales, Woellert, compete in State Speech and Debate events

Competing in a UIL State Meet once in your high school career is an accomplish­ment for most students. Making the UIL State Meet multiple times takes hard work, talent and dedication. For Big Spring High School Speech and Debate team members Alisa Gonzalez and Peyton Woellert, that dedication has paid off in a big way this school year. The duo competed at the UIL Academic State meet held recently on the campus of the University of Texas.

Gonzalez placed third in Persuasive Extemporan­eous Speaking.

“Considerin­g how I have been doing all year in extemp, I'm excited to be bringing home the bronze.” Gonzalez stated.

The BSHS Senior also qualified for the Speech and Debate State Meet in Lincoln-Douglas

Debate for a second year.

“I was fifth at state last year,” Gonzalez said, “And I was hoping to place higher this year, but my only loss was to the eventual state champion, so…”

Earlier in the semester, Gonzalez also qualified for the UIL State Congressio­nal Debate Tournament.

Also receiving accolades at the Speech and Debate State Meet was Woellert, who placed sixth in Informativ­e Extemporan­eous Speaking.

“I was hoping for a better result,” Woellert stated “But at the end of the day, there are a lot of people that can't ever say that they were in finals at the State meet.”

Woellert had success earlier in the semester, placing in the Top 10 at the UIL Cross-Examinatio­n State meet with his partner, Harper Duran; as well as
