Local Fourth of July closures announced

Monday is July 4, and many local government offices and local financial institutio­ns will be closed in observance of the Independen­ce Day holiday.

All city of Big Spring offices will be closed Monday. In addition, there will be no sanitation pickup on Monday. Monday's normal sanitation routes will be picked up on Tuesday, and Tuesday's normal routes will be picked up on Wednesday. Wednesday normally has no routes to be picked up. Regular schedule will resume on Thursday.

The Big Spring City Landfill will also be closed Monday. The landfill will be open on Saturday, July 2, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Russ McEwen Aquatic Center will be closed Sunday to help in staging the Pops in the Park celebratio­n that day, and will be open to the public on July 4 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Moss Creek Lake will be open during the holiday. The city reminds citizens that discharge of firearms or fireworks of any kind is prohibited within the Moss Creek Lake facility or on the lake property.

Emergency services, including police, fire and Emergency Medical Services, will continue normal operations during the holiday. The Emergency Utilities Department will also be available and can be reached at 264-2392.

All Howard County offices will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday, and will re-open on Tuesday. While the Howard County Sheriff's administra­tive offices will be closed, law enforcemen­t services will operate as usual.

Independen­ce Day is also a holiday for the United States Post Office. Local offices throughout the county will be closed and no mail will be delivered Monday. The Big Spring Post Office's lobby will remain open, offering access to post office boxes.

Big Spring's three large grocery stores – Wal-Mart, H-E-B and Porter's – will all operate with regular hours on Monday.

Most banks and credit unions throughout the county will be closed on Monday, but feature regular hours on Friday, Saturday and Tuesday. The lone exception will be Woodforest National Bank, located inside Wal-Mart. Woodforest will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, rather than its usual 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
