Big Spring track runners set PR'S at Texas Tech Under Armour High School Classic

LUBBOCK – Runners from the Big Spring Steers and Lady Steers track teams competed at the Texas Tech Under Armour High School Classic this past Friday and Saturday. The meet featured nationally and state ranked runners from Texas and the surroundin­g states.

Big Spring head coaches Brandon Clemmons (boys) and Audrey Dunn (girls) stated that the meet provided an opportunit­y for their runners to shake some early season rust off before the start of the season and more importantl­y an opportunit­y to compete against some quality competitio­n.

In the end, the Steers and Lady Steers runners came away with new PR'S and some confidence heading into the season. “The girls ran really well this weekend. We had a few girls that kind of stood out at this meet but overall I'm pleased with how all the girls competed this weekend.” coach Dunn said.

Coach Clemmons concurred with Dunn. “Well the good thing is is that both the boys and girls finished the meet running personal bests and thats always a good thing this early in the season.” Clemmons said.

Big Spring's Jose Munoz got things started for Big Spring on Friday night as Munoz competed in the 60m run. Munoz would run a personal best of 7.49 second in his heat. Munoz would finish 168th overall out of 271 runners in the event.

Also competing in Friday night's prelims, were six Lady Steers who competed in the girls 400 meters. All six Lady Steers ran to new personal bests. Freshmen Bergan Pinkley led the way finishing 104th overall with a time of 1:04.53 out of a field of 197 runners. Junior Dorcas Jones was behind Pinkley finishing 106th overall with a time of 1:04.66.

Rounding out the rest of the Lady Steers were Alysandra De La Cruz 155th place (1:09.43), Aracelee Alvarado 156th place (1:09.44), Skylyn Rivera 160th place (1:10.11), and Alexa Mehan 167th place (1:11.91).

Pinkley, Alvarado, and De La Cruz would run again on Saturday in the girls 800 meters. Pinkley again led the way as she finished 54th overall with a time of 2:39.70. Alvarado would finish 70th with a time of 2:52.79 and De La Cruz would finish 77th overall with a time of 2:57.89.

Competing the in boys 800 meters for the Steers were senior Augustine Salgado and sophomore Diego Rios. Salgado would set a new PR in the 800 running a 2:03 and finishing 25th overall. Rios would also run a personal best of 2:13.89 to finish 70th overall. Senior Isaac Gonzales would be the last Steer to compete for the day as Gonzales competed in the boys mile race.

Gonzales set a new PR in the mile running a 4:42.56 to finish 27th overall out of a field of 117 runners. The Steers and Lady Steers will have three weeks before they kick off their season in Andrews as they get ready to compete in the Max Goldsmith Mustang Relays.
