The 54th Annual Big Spring Prospector's Gem and Mineral Show slated for March

It's time to 'rock' out in Big Spring. The 54th Annual Big
Spring Prospector's Gem and Mineral Show is just around the corner.
The annual event is slated to take place March 4-5 at the Howard County Fair Barn and will feature 13 vendors displaying a variety of wares.
“It's pretty much the same as previous years,” said Club Secretary and wearer-of-many-hats Lola Lamb. “But it's good for anyone interested in rocks, gems and minerals.”
Members of the non-profit club create jewelry and decorative items using tools and talent to expose the natural beauty of what would otherwise be disregarded as plain old rocks.
According to Lamb, there will be outside vendors and the Apache Creek Fiddlers will be providing musical entertainment. The highlights of the event as in previous years will be the geode cracking and the spinning wheel. “We have a vendor who provides this every year and it's always a big attraction,” said Lamb and explained that each person can pick out their own geode for cracking.
Other highlights include a silent auction and a grand prize to awarded at the end of the show. Chances to win the grand prize are $1 each. There will be door prizes awarded every hour and you have to be present to win.
The grand prize will be a Star of Big Spring faceted topaz designed by Long and Steel in honor of Big Spring.
While waiting for the door prize awarded every hour, perusers can take advantage of the food vendors and snack bar or enjoy the displays provided by club members from Lubbock and Midland. The snack bar will have hamburgers, tacos, tamales and nutrition drinks as well as sodas, tea and coffee.
Hours for the event will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
The Big Spring Prospector's Club meets every 2nd of the month at 606 E. Third St. at 5:30 p.m. in the winter or 6 p.m. in the summer.
