Coahoma softball improves to 2-0 in district play with dominant win over Grape Creek

- By PATRICK GONZALES Herald Sports Writer

Coahoma's Makayla Calvio once again shut down Grape Creek this past Friday as the Bulldogettes walked away with a dominant 18-0 win over the Lady Eagles. Calvio again displayed her dominance in the circle as she threw a complete game shutout. The hurler gave up only one hit while not allowing a single run or walk.

Calvio also struck out eight batters in the contest. The Bulldogettes got things going early in the sixth inning. Coahoma's Christian Everett hit a pop fly into left field but an error by the Grape Creek outfielder allowed Everett to reach all the way to third.

Everett would score at the next at bat, as Hannah Wells was walked but a past ball four by the catcher allowed Everett to score. Errors would prove costly for Grape Creek in the bottom of the first as Coahoma took advantage to take a 6-0 early lead.

Grape Creek was able to get a runner on off of a single in the second inning but the Lady Eagles were unable to capitalize on it. Coahoma would score an additional five runs to increase their lead 11-0. The Bulldogettes put the game away for good in the bottom of the third as they put up an additional seven runs to lead the Lady Eagles 18-0.

Coahoma's Mia Clemmer, Nevaeh Kerby, Shae Lang, Karleigh Burt, Baylor Wright, and Christian Everett each had RBIS in the inning. Wright and Clemmer led the charge in the third inning as they each launched a home run. All in all the Bulldogettes had another impressive day at the plate as they racked up a total of 14 hits for 18 runs. Coahoma only had one error in the game.

Grape Creek's Noah Pallarez was credited with the loss for the Lady Eagles. Pallarez allowed 13 hits and 18 runs over two and two-thirds innings while striking out only one. Grape Creek's Jadyn Jones threw for one and one-third innings in relief.

Coahoma's Rodriguez led the Bulldogettes in hits as she went 3-for-3 at the plate. Coahoma (15-3, 2-0) will host the Lady Bulldogs from Clyde today in District 6-3A action. The varsity game is set for 1 p.m. with JV game to follow after at 2:30 p.m.
