Lady Steers softball falls to Snyder in extra inning in District 5-4A opener

The Lady Steers softball team opened up District 5-4A play on Tuesday as they hosted the Lady Tigers from Snyder at Lady Steer Field. It was a tight game that required eight innings and in the end Snyder walked away with the upset, beating Big Spring 2-1.

Tied at 1-1 heading into the eighth, Snyder was facing two outs before they got a huge break from their pitcher Saleigh Hernandez. Hernandez blasted a solo home run to left field that put the Lady Tigers up 2-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Lady Steers earned a walk to start off. However, Snyder's Hernandez would seal the win for the Lady Tigers as she retired the next three batters to end the game.

Snyder got on the board early as they scored one run in the top of the first on a double line drive to left field. Big Spring's Perez would get out of the inning without surrenderi­ng another run. Hernandez would retire Big Spring's first three at bats to end the inning.

Both teams would go scoreless from the second through fourth innings, before Big Spring was able to put a run on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Big Spring's Illeana Madrid hit a double line drive to right field to bring in Cloe Viasana for the tying run.

Steers had an opportunit­y to put the up another run with runners on the third and first base but Snyder would get out of the inning with a pop out fly to keep the score tied at 1-1. The bottom of the seventh looked promising for the Lady Steers as Viasana started out with a double.

On Big Springs next at bat, Madrid hit a hard line drive to Snyder's second baseman Kyra Solis but Solis was able to field the ball clean for the double play. The inning would end on a line out in right field.

Defense was exceptiona­l for both teams as neither made any errors throughout the game. Snyder's Hernandez and Big Spring's Ellianna Perez were dominate in the circle as each put some up impressive numbers in the game.

Big Spring's Perez was credited with the loss after pitching for all eight innings. Perez retired 11 batters while giving up two runs on seven hits, one walk and one home run.

Snyder's Hernandez earned the win as she threw for eight innings giving up one run on nine hits with three walks. Hernandez also struck out 10 batters.

Big Spring's Rebecca Rodriguez led the Lady Steers at the plate as she went 3-for-4. Viasana went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run and a double and Madrid went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Big Spring (6-6-1, 0-1) will be back in action this Friday as they head to San Angelo to take on the Maidens in district play. The varsity game is set for a 5 p.m. start with the JV game to follow shortly after.
