Steers, Lady Steers efforts fall short in losses to Sweetwater

- Patrick Gonzales HERALD SPORTS EDITOR

It was an exciting Tuesday night at Steer Gym as Big Spring hosted Sweetwater in District 5-4A basketball action. The Lady Steers fell short of the win after mounting a strong second half effort. The Steers also dropped their game to the Mustangs after battling back in the second half. Here are the highlights from those games.

SECOND HALF EFFORT NOT ENOUGH FOR LADY STEERS TO OVERCOME SWEETWATER

Already eliminated from the playoffs, the Lady Steers were looking to end their season on high note in the form of an upset win over the Sweetwater Lady Mustangs.

The game proved to be an exciting one as both teams battled for all four quarters, including a solid effort by Big Spring in the second half. Trailing 26-24 heading into the fourth quarter, the Lady Steers went on a six point scoring run to take a four point lead that lasted midway through the fourth quarter.

The Lady Mustangs would tie the game up at 30-30 courtesy of some Big Spring fouls midway through the fourth quarter. Big Spring's Emily Carreon would give the Lady Steers a one point lead after being fouled and knocking down one-of-two free throw shots.

For the remainder of the quarter, Sweetwater would hold the Lady Steers scoreless as they put up eight more points to secure a hard fought 38-34 win over Big Spring.

Sophomore Breanna Woodruff once again led the team in scoring recording 16 points in the loss. Woodruff would also tally nine rebounds, four steals and two assists. Carreon recorded eight points with three rebounds, and four steals.

Senior Angelina Rivera posted five points with eight rebounds two steals and an assist. Kutter Pearson had three points with four rebounds and two blocks.

Big Spring ended it's season with a 5-25 overall record and 2-8 district record.

STEERS UNABLE TO KEEP UP WITH MUSTANGS

Big Spring did everything they could to keep pace with the Mustangs Tuesday night at Steer Gym but the Steers could not close the gap as Sweetwater rode on to a 65-52 win.

The Steers only lead of the game was in the first quarter as they led Sweetwater 8-6. From that point on the Mustangs outscored Big Spring 17-12, 20-14, and 22-18 to earn a big district win over the Steers.

Big Spring was able to close the gap early on in the fourth quarter with big shots by senior Gavin Padron who laced two back-to-back three point shots to give the Steers offense some momentum. The Steers scoring effort in the final quarter was also led by freshman Daniel Perez who scored seven of his 18 points in the game.

However, late turnovers and fouls would stifle the Steers momentum in the final minutes of the game. Padron led the Steers in scoring recording a game high 21 points while nabbing four rebounds, two steals, and four assists.

In addition to his game high 18 points, Perez also recorded five rebounds, two steals and two assists. Sophomore guard Jacob Marquez contributed seven points in the loss. Marquez also recorded three steals as well.

Big Spring (11-21, 1-7) will travel to Levelland this Friday in continued District 5-4A action. The Steers are currently still in the hunt for a playoff spot but will need to win out against Levelland this Friday and top ranked Estacado next Tuesday. The Steers will also need help in the form of losses for both Snyder and Lakeview. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
