8 Virginia bluebells
MERTENSIA VIRGINICA, ZONES 3 TO 8
With a spray of nodding, dainty bellshaped flowers, Virginia bluebells add sophistication to any garden. Pink buds appear as early as March. The flowers are pink at first but eventually turn blue. Plant this 1- to 2-foot charmer in the shade alongside summertime bloomers whose foliage can cover the spent wildflower.
Why we love it: Bluebell leaves die back in early summer leaving room for garden companions, like hostas.
