THE SOUND AND GLORY
Mick, I have a new 2016 Cobalt 26 SD powered by a Volvo Penta 300 hp Duoprop sterndrive. It gets really loud between 2,400 and 3,000 rpm. Is this normal and, if so, is there any way to reduce the noise? Also, is it possible to convert a regular throttle to an electronic one? Thanks.

Hi Kerry. You already have an electronic throttle. Optional available features for a single engine are: cruise control, Powertrim Assistant and Tow Mode. See your dealer or contact Volvo Penta for upgrade information.
As for the sound, it’s normal for almost any boat powered by a gasoline sterndrive to get dramatically noisier in that engine-speed range. When we tested the 26 SD, it was with a MerCruiser engine, but the sound level jumps from 67 to 83 db.
When we tested the 26 SD WSS, it was powered by a 380 hp Volvo Penta Duoprop, and the sound level jumps from 73 to 85 db right in that same engine-speed zone.
Both of these boat tests, along with an archive of other test data, can be found at boatingmag.com/boatreviews-0. Enjoy your new boat! —
