RUSTED

-

Q: Mick, I have a 2016 Cobalt 26SD and keep it slipped on the Potomac River in northern Virginia. When trailered, I clean the waterline (and bottom) at least twice per year, mostly because I cannot stand to look at it. I use Slimy Grimy, an off-theshelf cleaner containing oxalic acid. It works well and is easy to use. The problem is that the oxalic acid and/or the other chemicals leave serious stains on my galvanized trailer. What is the best DIY method to clean the stains off my trailer? Thanks!

Rick McKeown Fairfax Station, Virginia

A: Hi Rick. You cannot let acid (oxalic, muriatic, etc.) cleaners get on your trailer. Can. Not. Do. It. The acid eats the finish.

If the fenders have not yet turned to Swiss cheese, you can grind back the stains and rust to bright metal. Then you can apply what’s called “cold galvanizing spray.” This is basically a zinc-rich coating in an aerosol can. Follow all directions and safety precautions on the product label.

As for your boat’s bottom, you can coat it with anti-fouling paint, or you can haul the boat weekly or every 10 days or so and clean it with milder chemicals. Growth won’t be so tough after a week, but the time frame will vary locally; only you can judge the specific rate of growth on your boat in your slip. If you leave it slipped long enough that you need to use acid, then cover the trailer with tarps during the cleaning process.
