San Cap Motor Club members show off their wheels

Exotic cars with swooping fenders and puckered grills, muscle cars with souped-up engines, and polished classics with designs that tell their age fill the parking lot of Periwinkle Place shopping center on Sanibel Island. That’s how you know it’s the first Saturday of the month—the day San Cap Motor Club members gather to show off their collection-worthy vehicles and talk about, what else but, their passion for cars.

Although it dates back only to 2015, the Sanibel club has more than 50 members, which is quite impressive for such a small island. And although it was the love of cars—any type of car—that brought them together, it’s the camaraderie that bonds them now.

The group meets twice a month, except during summer. A Cruise-In is held at Periwinkle Place on the first Saturday of the month. Everyone, from the curious to the enthusiastic, from members of other Southwest Florida clubs to car-centric visitors, is welcome. You can expect to see some 50 cars from all eras. “It is amazing to see the hidden island vehicles gather for the festive display every month in season,” says the club’s cofounder Scot Congress. In addition to viewing cars, there’s a continental breakfast provided by the Blue Giraffe restaurant.

Then on the second Tuesday of the month, the members gather for dinner at Dante’s Coal Fired Pizza, where once again their passion for cars fuels the conversation. A new topic for the group in 2019 is planning overseas “field trips” to other car venues, depending on individual interests.

Pleased with the club’s success, Congress admits, “It makes me proud to say that we actually started something that is fun and brings such a diverse group of folks together who share one passion: cars!”
