DHDC celebrates National Read Across America Day
Amarillo, TX - DHDC is participating in the National Education Association’s National Read Across America Day on Saturday, March 2, with public programming included in general admission or DHDC membership.
DHDC will host a storytime every two hours starting at 10:00 am and encourages visitors to come dressed as their favorite storybook characters.
Providing a hands-on, collaborative space for visitors at all learning levels and educational interests is a major part of the literacy initiatives and elements that the DHDC started in 2023. With the opening of exhibit spaces such as the Literacy Corner and Treehouse Reading Nook, as well as their weekly program Storytime at DHDC, they have been purposeful in working towards this goal.
DHDC aims to increase access to literary resources in the community and to bridge the gap in educational achievement existing in vulnerable communities.
Their efforts were recognized last year with the award of a $4,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support youth literacy efforts.
“Literacy fosters discovery, aligning perfectly with our mission,” Director of Education
Heather Stover said. “We aim to foster literacy, cultivate a passion for learning, and convey science in a way that captivates our guests.”
The Don Harrington Discovery Center is a hands-on science center that makes science exciting, relevant, and interesting to all types of learners by providing interactive exhibits and programs that actively engage children, adolescents, and their families.
