NFLPA suspends Narayan

The NFL Players Associatio­n indefinite­ly suspended the registrati­on of a financial adviser accused of cheating several profession­al athletes out of millions of dollars in a Ponzislike scheme.

The move by the NFLPA comes a day after the Securities and Exchange Commission announced it had obtained a court order freezing Ash Narayan’s assets. Denver Broncos quarterbac­k Mark

Sanchez, San Francisco Giants pitcher Jake Peavy and retired Houston Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt were among the athletes cheated out of more than $30 million. . . .

Johnny Manziel reported a hit-andrun accident to Dallas police earlier this week, and a representa­tive of the troubled quarterbac­k says he wasn’t seriously injured. Manziel remains unsigned after the Browns cut him in March after two tumultuous years. . . .

Dez Bryant faces a lawsuit from his former landlord regarding allegation­s of more than $60,000 in damages to a house the Dallas Cowboys receiver leased. The suit was filed last week.

Olympics: McIlroy opts out

Golfer Rory McIlroy became one of the most high-profile sports stars to

opt out of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics because of concerns about the Zika virus, saying yesterday it is “a risk I am unwilling to take.”

The fourth-ranked McIlroy was scheduled to play for Ireland as golf makes its return to the Olympics for the first time since 1904.

McIlroy is not the first golfer to opt

out. Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Vijay Singh have also said they won’t compete at Rio, mostly because of scheduling commitment­s as well as the Zika virus. . . .

Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus face one-year suspension­s from internatio­nal weightlift­ing competitio­n following the retesting of samples from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, which might prevent lifters from those countries competing at the Rio Games in August.

Soccer: Portugal, Ireland in

Portugal came back twice from the brink of eliminatio­n yesterday, and Ireland found a late goal to stun Italy and stay in the European Championsh­ip. Portugal and Ireland earned the final two slots.

Belgium confirmed its place in the supposedly easier half of the knockout bracket by beating Sweden 1-0. . . .

Charles Aranguiz and Jose Pedro Feunzalida scored in the first half and defending champion Chile returned to the Copa America championsh­ip with a soggy 2-0 victory over Colombiala­st night in Chicago.

Misc: Woods not ready

Tiger Woods said he is making progress in his rehab but still won’t put a timetable on when he’ll return to competitiv­e golf. Woods, who hasn’t played on the PGA Tour in 10 months after two back surgeries last year, isn’t yet able to play 36 holes a day and practice how he’d like. . . .

Two-time champion and secondrank­ed Inbee Park withdrew from the U.S. Women’s Open next month because of a left thumb injury. . . .

Jared Oliva homered and JC Cloney pitched seven strong innings, leading Arizona to a 3-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a College World Series eliminatio­n game in Omaha, Neb. The Wildcats play Oklahoma State tomorrow in the Bracket 1 final.
