Good to be ‘Bad’

Hahn revels in role of uninhibited mom

In the raunchy femalecentric farce “Bad Moms,” Kathryn Hahn proves to be its scene-stealing comic propane.

Her hard drinking, say anything, raucous character Carla soars in her own orbit, far beyond the frontiers of dutiful domesticity.

She's a vivid contrast to responsible but overwhelmed Amy (Mila Kunis) and lonely, obedient Kiki (Kristen Bell).

“To play a momma who was that unencumbered by guilt or shame of any kind, who is putting her needs before anyone else was a cathartic fantasy come true.

“I just never to get to do this in my real life,” said the married mother of two last Friday from her L.A. home. “So it was really fun to jump off that cliff oncamera.”

As boisterous and uninhibited as Carla may be, “I wouldn't say she's crazy,” Hahn, 43, added.

“She had those Kiki and those Amy years and now she's a single mom. Whatever happened (in the split) was not fun — and her one boy for the most part is out of the house.

“He's incredibly bright and she gave up a lot for him. She went through that period of taking care of her son and now is finding out who she was before motherhood.

“I see her dying for some pals and she ends up being an incredible friend to these two ladies.”

Hahn hits the bulls-eye with every outrageous zinger — most, she revealed, were made up on the spot. “They said they were letting me off leash, which is hilarious.”

Her favorite moment filming was “the hair and makeup test where we put it all together. That,” she joked, “was like a Dr. Frankenstein awakening.”

She has one souvenir — a surprise.

“I was unpacking my bag and one of her boob cutlets dropped out. It takes a village to make Carla's cleavage.”

“Bad Moms” ends with a mini-documentary as each female cast member sits on a couch with her real mother.

“That was in the original script where the real moms share their real bad mom stories. We knew it was coming and were all scared of what they would say.

“It ended up being an amazing hour for each of us — and real deep. Until I had kids on my own, I never had such profound empathy for my mom.”

(“Bad Moms” opens Friday.)
