Orioles catch break from Rockies

-

Adam Jones scored the winning run in the 10th inning on a low throw to the plate by pitcher Jordan Lyles, and the Orioles beat the Colorado Rockies, 3-2, last night in interleague play in Baltimore for their fifth straight victory.

Jones reached on a oneout single off the third-base bag and took third on a single by Jonathan Schoop. Manny Machado followed with a comebacker to Lyles, who fumbled the ball before throwing home. Catcher Nick Hundley caught the ball near the ground and lost it while attempting to tag the sliding Jones.

Lyles (2-3) was charged with an error on the play.

Getting two RBI from Jones, the Orioles climbed a season-high 18 games over .500 (58-40) and improved to 37-14 at home.

Chaz Roe (1-0) worked the 10th for the win.

Nolan Arenado homered for the Rockies, whose four-game winning streak ended. After Jones singled in a secondinning run, Arenado led off the fourth by sending a 1-0 pitch into the leftfield seats. It was his 26th homer of the season and second in two games. Blue Jays 4, Padres 2 — Aaron Sanchez pitched seven shutout innings to win his 10th consecutive decision, Kevin Pillar had three hits and host Toronto beat San Diego.

Sanchez (11-1) is the first Blue Jays pitcher to win 10 straight since Roy Halladay won 15 in a row in 2003. Halladay and Roger Clemens (1998) hold the club record. White Sox 5, Cubs 4 — Tyler Saladino hit a walkoff single as the host White Sox beat the Cubs despite blowing another late lead.

The Cubs trailed 4-2 before Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo both hit RBI singles in the ninth. They had runners on first and second with two out when Dan Jennings (4-2) struck out Jason Heyward to escape the threat. American League Yankees 2, Astros 1— Austin Romine hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning to make a winner of Michael Pineda, and New York’s bullpen did just fine without star closer Aroldis Chapman to beat host Houston.

Hours after New York traded Chapman to the Chicago Cubs, All-Star relievers Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller closed out the Astros to help the fourth-place Yankees move three games above .500 for the first time this season. Rangers 7, Athletics 6 — Adrian Beltre hit his second home run of the game with two outs in the ninth inning, a two-run shot that rallied host Texas past Oakland for its third straight win.

Beltre, who finished with four hits, had two singles in his first three at-bats before hitting a solo homer in the seventh. His game-winning drive came on the first pitch from Ryan Madson (3-4).

Rangers slugger Prince Fielder is expected to have season-ending neck surgery for the second time in three years, and his career could be jeopardy as well. Angels 6, Royals 2 — Albert Pujols drove in four runs, Hector Santiago won his fifth consecutive start and Los Angeles beat host Kansas City. National League

Reds 7, Giants 5 — Jay Bruce hit a pair of two-run homers, Eugenio Suarez added a two-run shot and Cincinnati got a victory in

San Francisco.

Anthony DeSclafani improved to 6-0 for the Reds despite allowing five runs on six hits in five innings.

Tony Cingrani struck out two for his 11th save. Brewers 7, Diamondbacks

2— Martin Maldonado hit a three-run homer and host Milwaukee went deep four times, spoiling the major league debut of Arizona starter Braden Shipley.

Scooter Gennett, Jonathan Villar and pinch-hitter Andy Wilkins also connected for the Brewers. Chase Anderson went five innings to beat his former team for his first win since June 8.

Phillies 4, Marlins 0 — Jeremy Hellickson dominated Florida for a second straight start, throwing six innings of one-hit ball to help visiting Philadelphia to victory.

Hellickson held Miami to a run in eight innings in a 4-1 win five days ago. The 29-year-old is the subject of trade rumors, some connecting him to the Marlins. Cardinal-Mets, ppd. — The St. Louis at New York Mets game last night was postponed because of rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader today starting at 4:10 p.m.
