Texas A&M police arrest Wheeler on drug charges

Former Texas A&M defensive lineman Mark Wheeler, whose eight-year NFL career included playing the 1996-98 seasons with the Patriots, faces drug-related counts after being arrested in a parking lot on the college’s campus in Bryan, Texas.

Jail records showed Wheeler was being held yesterday on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug parapherna­lia. Bond for Wheeler, who is from San Marcos, Texas, was set at $10,200.

KBTX-TV reported that Texas A&M police responded to reports of a suspicious person in a truck sometime before dawn. An arrest report said police found marijuana and cocaine in the vehicle. . . .

Wheeler was drafted by Tampa Bay in 1992 and played four seasons with the Buccaneers before moving on to the Patriots. His NFL career ended in 1999 with the Philadelph­ia Eagles. . . .

NBA: MJ donates to cause

NBA great and Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan announced he is giving $1 million to the Institute for Community-Police Relations and another $1 million to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The aim is to help build trust between the black community and police following several shootings around the country.

“As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcemen­t and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers,” Jordan said in a statement. “I grieve with the families who have lost loved ones, as I know their pain all too well.” . . .

Coach Tyrron Lue agreed to a multiyear contract extension with the NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press. . . .

Dion Waiters and the Miami Heat were finalizing a one-year free agent contract worth $2.9 million, two people with knowledge of the negotiatio­ns revealed to the AP. . . .
