N.Y. Dems: Donald won’t make it here
PHILADELPHIA — Democratic delegates from Donald Trump’s home state assailed the Queens-born billionaire as not a “true New Yorker” as they prepared to hear their former senator, Hillary Clinton, accept the presidential nomination yesterday.
“A real New Yorker? I’m not even sure he’s a real person,” said Harriet Cornell of West Nyack, N.Y. “Frankly, the things he says are so outrageous, you wouldn’t want your children to hear the kinds of things he says.”
The real estate mogul — a lifelong resident of the Big Apple — has repeatedly vowed to win the Empire State in November.
You gotta be kidding, his neighbors responded.
“It’s a travesty that he has the ‘New York’ next to his name,” said Lisa Sacco of Syracuse. “He doesn’t represent how I feel about New York or the country.”
“I don’t think he gets what New York is about at all,” agreed Sean Massey of Binghamton. “The prejudice and bigotry he is pushing, it’s not New York, it’s not America.”
During a speech to the delegation, Gov. Andrew Cuomo recalled how he helped direct traffic recently after a crane toppled — an anecdote that showcased the state’s charm in uniquely New York fashion.
“I was cursed in more different languages and with more hand gestures, and I thought I was familiar with all of the hand gestures,” Cuomo said, drawing laughter. “New York is a monument to that diversity, 18 million people from all over the world, that’s why I got cursed in a thousand different languages.”
