SUMMER OF SHAKESPEARE
If you haven't yet seen Commonwealth Shakespeare Company's free performance of “Love's Labour's Lost” on Boston Common, you still have time — it runs through Aug. 7.
But consider this option from the local theater institution, now celebrating its 21st season. On Aug. 4, you can see their actors-in-training perform at the
Museum of Fine Arts, thanks to CSC's remarkable Apprentice Program, an intensive summer session for young actors dreaming of a career in theater arts.
The youngsters will present “Cymbeline,” Shakespeare's fairy-tale vision of a young girl's struggle with an evil stepmother, false accusations and a gender bent expedition to a war between nations.
“We're very excited to be presenting `Cymbeline' at the MFA this summer,” said Adam Sanders, the Shakespeare company's associate director.
“Partnerships between cultural institutions aren't just a nice way to do business, it's becoming a crucial strategy for survival in the arts. I'm so glad for our friendship with this Boston landmark.
“Besides being one of the coolest venues an artist could hope to work in, this production of `Cymbeline' sends a powerful message that validates the cultural importance of free theater, the hallmark of Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, by seeing it within the walls of this institution,” Sanders said.
In keeping with artistic director Steven Maler's vision that Shakespeare “belongs and should be accessible to everyone,” the performance is free but tickets are required.
They will be available on Aug. 4 starting at 10 a.m. and can be ordered by calling 1-800-4406975 or by visiting any MFA ticket desk.
