Cops: Bank robber holed up in Southie
The hunt for a New Hampshire bank robber moved to South Boston last night as dozens of police cordoned off a neighborhood of the West Broadway projects to nab the man, police said.
Police at the scene said that an AK-style assault rifle was recovered by police, however, the man had barricaded himself inside of an apartment on Orton Marotta Way with a second weapon.
That brought out a massive response by the Boston Police Department, including a negotiator, a SWAT team and an armored tactical vehicle, which police positioned around the building.
In addition, dozens of residents were evacuated from their homes around the unit.
A man who lives next door to the building police were apparently targeting said he saw cops arrive about 9 p.m., including cops who appeared to have tactical equipment with them — shields and what he described as SWAT body armor.
He said a police officer shined a light into a window of a unit beside his several times.
“He looked real jittery,” the man said.
He said the police didn’t tell him what was going on, but a short time later asked that he and everybody in the home leave for their own safety.
