Jays stay tied atop AL East

Russell Martin had three hits and two RBI, R.A. Dickey pitched 6C innings for his first home win since July 10 and the Blue Jays beat the Los Angeles Angels, 7-2, last night in Toronto to remain tied with the Red Sox for first place in the AL East.

Michael Saunders hit his 21st home run, a solo shot off A.J. Achter in the eighth, and Edwin Encarnacio­n and Darwin Barney each reached base three times as the Blue Jays won their fifth straight against the Angels. Toronto has outscored Los Angeles, 51-16, in that span.

Angels rookie Nick Buss hit his first major league home run, a two-run drive off Dickey in the second, but Los Angeles lost for the fourth time in six games, and their 11th straight on the road. Yankees 5, Mariners 1 — Jacoby Ellsbury hit a tworun homer and CC Sabathia pitched seven innings to win for the third time in two months, leading visiting New York over Seattle.

Sabathia (8-10) was 2-6 with a 6.78 ERA in his previous 11 starts.

Tigers 8, Twins 3 — In Minneapoli­s, Cameron Maybin drove in three runs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth, to spark Detroit to a win against Minnesota. Athletics 9, Indians 1 — Khris Davis hit a three-run homer and scored three times, and host Oakland beat Cleveland to snap a three-game losing streak. National League

Cubs 5, Padres 3 — Jake Arrieta (16-5) threw eight scoreless innings of twohit ball to become the NL’s first 16-game winner and Kris Bryant and Addison Russell homered, leading visiting Chicago over San Diego. Mets 7, Cardinals 4 — Wilmer Flores and Justin Ruggiano homered as visiting New York beat St. Louis. Brewers 6, Rockies 4 — Hernan Perez hit a two-run

triple in the seventh inning, lifting host Milwaukee to a comeback victory against Colorado. Braves 7, Diamondbac­ks 4

— In Phoenix, Matt Kemp’s two-out, bases-loaded double in the eighth inning erased a one-run Arizona lead and pushed Atlanta to victory. Interleagu­e Orioles 8, Nationals 1 — Kevin Gausman scattered six hits in six shutout innings, Adam Jones was 4-for-5 and host Baltimore breezed past Washington.

After the game, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said ace Chris Tillman appears headed to the 15-day disabled list with a sore right shoulder.

Royals 1, Marlins 0 — Yordano Ventura escaped two threats while pitching six innings, and Kansas City extended its winning streak to nine games by beating host Miami.

Pirates 7, Astros 1 — Ivan Nova (10-6) took a shutout into the ninth inning and finished with a six-hitter while Gregory Polanco hit two home runs to lead host Pittsburgh past Houston.

Reds 3, Rangers 0 — Dan Straily extended his surge since the All-Star break by pitching six innings of shutout ball, and Joey Votto drove in a pair of runs to lead host Cincinnati to a win against Texas.

The Rangers placed Josh Hamilton on unconditio­nal release waivers, though they hope his surgically rebuilt left knee is healthy enough to allow him to try for a spot with the team next season.
