Report: Near $1B loss led to huge tax break

Trump says docs obtained illegally

Pages of Donald Trump’s 1995 tax return mailed to The New York Times show the real estate mogul lost $916 million that year that translated into a huge tax deduction, the paper reported.

The first page of Donald and his second wife, Marla’s, tax return filed in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey show the couple reporting a loss of $915,729,293 that year, according to the documents released by the Times late last night.

The couple’s return shows they made a combined $6,108 in wages, $7.4 million from interest on investments, $26,051 from dividends, $64,205 from tax refunds and credits, and $3.4 million from business income.

The revelation may ratchet up pressure on the Republican presidential nominee to release recent tax returns that he has withheld — departing from decades of political tradition — because they are under an audit.

Hillary Clinton, at Monday’s debate, attacked Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns, saying: “you’ve gotta ask yourself: Why won’t he release his tax returns?”

In a letter to the Times, the Trump campaign said the document was illegally obtained and insisted Trump’s “fiduciary responsibility to his business, his family and his employees” leads him to “pay no more tax than legally required.”

Also yesterday, Clinton and Bay State U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren seized on a series of early-morning Twitter posts Trump directed at former Miss Universe Alicia Machado after he was accused of mocking her when the pageant winner gained weight in the ’90s.

In an apparent dig at Trump, who tweeted the messages at 3:20 a.m. Friday, Clinton posted early yesterday morning: “It’s 3:20 a.m. As good a time as any to tweet about national service” along with a link to a story on her campaign website about volunteer work.

In a series of successive tweets, Warren wrote: “You never tweet at 3am with ways to create new jobs for workers or hold Wall Street accountable, @realDonaldTrump. The only things that keep your mind racing at night are your next racist, sexist tweets & disgusting lies.”

But Trump responded to the criticism with yet another tweet: “For those few people knocking me for tweeting at three o’clock in the morning, at least you know I will be there, awake, to answer the call!”
