Eagles make brief work with Boxers

- By SEAN BRENNAN

BROCKTON — One week after blanking Leominster, BC High again displayed a dominant defense yesterday with a 20-0 shutout of Brockton.

BC High (3-0) finished with five sacks and two interceptions on defense while running back Danny Abraham handled the bulk of the offensive load, rushing for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

“We knew that we had to stop their run game, that was our priority coming in, and I thought we did a nice job of that,” said BC High coach Jon Bartlett.

The Eagles held the Boxers to two first downs in the first-half mist while building a 20-0 lead at the break.

The Eagles took little time getting on the scoreboard. Quarterback Connor Cady ran for 21 yards on the first play from scrimmage before Abraham scored on a 52-yard touchdown run as BC High went up 7-0 just 32 seconds into the game.

BC High’s Francis Dooley burst off the edge to sack Boxers quarterback Matt Caruso, forcing a punt on Brockton’s first possession. The Eagles special teams gifted the offensive unit by blocking the punt with BC High’s Will Bowen recovering at the Brockton 19.

Three plays later, Cady connected with Kyle Burke on a 16-yard scoring strike and the Eagles went up 14-0. Cady also finished with 77 rushing yards.

Brockton (2-2) did little, if anything, with its next three drives. Running back Edmund Kelsey finally provided some traction, carrying five times for 23 yards to set the Boxers up inside the Eagles 20. But another sack by Dooley on third down and an incomplete pass on fourth down set up the Eagles for an eight-play, 80yard scoring drive.

It was all for naught, because Abraham finished off the scoring with a 39-yard TD run. And with three sacks and two interceptions in the second half, the Eagles ran their unscored-upon streak to eight quarters.

“The defense is just focused and they are confident,” said Abraham. “They believe in what they do and they know that if they make a stop the offense will pick them up.”
